how much horsepower ?

okay i have a stock 305 out of an 84' monte. and i have modified the following:

I have added:
Headers
A new 600cfm edelbrock
Pete jackson gear drive
Accel coil pack (but no accel wires or plugs)

removed:
A/c compresser
Smog pump
egr valve.
Both catalytic converters

given what i have removed and added, what do you all think the horsepower may be at right now ? I think it was probably around 225 to begin with but im thinkin this:

Headers: + 10 HP
600 cfm: + 10 HP but not sure/if any
Gear Drive: + 5 but not sure if any/is there truer timing ?
accel pack: ???

what do yall think ?

Re: how much horsepower ?

well i would put your factory hp closer to 170, with the headers and other mods id say youve probly broken 200, maybe 210 or 220 total.

dam. thats not much of anything really. any cheap ways of improving the horses substantially ? I was also thinkin about gettin a supercharger for around 900 bucks but i probably wont. my goal is to have it at 300 HP. and even at 220 HP, are they still that fast ?

Re: how much horsepower ?

you need intake and cylinder heads. intake will be much less expensive ~$120. also new intake will probably not allow air cleaner to fit under the factory hood.

well cylinder heads are out of the picture czu the motors really done. how much HP would an edelbrock High rise intake add ? I dont think any of thats gonna be a problem. I bought a hood from www.americansportscar.com and its about a 4'' ram air hood. Its the big block hood in red paint (for 82-92 camaro's) part # s-290. The hood is awesome.

I love that hood. I am debating on getting the hood or a paint job...

If it was an SS, you started with 190 HP and might be pushing 220 now. If it was a plain jane Monte, 140hp to start and migt be up to 160 now.

hey man. I would go with www.americansportscar.com just because i was strapped for cash and they let me pay on it for 2 months til i had it payed off. After i talked her down, the hood was $ 325 which isnt half bad at all, especially for that hood. and with my experiences, hawks thirdgenparts are just too dam expensive. but best of luck.

so my addiditions now include

high rise performer intake
headers
gear drive
new 600 cfm carb
and soon to be, msd ignition system.

ive removed:
smog pump
a/c compresser
and my only catalytic converter

im just tryin to squeeze every last ounce of HP out of the ole 305 and i may have hit my limit.

If you started with the 140 hp engine, you're wasting time, it was low compression and had a crappy cam.
If you have the 190hp HO engine, you could probably get it to 225 easily and 300 with some internals changed; cam, 1.6 rockers, thinner head gaskets to bump the cr up a little and porting of the heads.
Now, if you have the crappy "swirl" heads, get rid of them and latch onto a pair of 1985 TPI heads and port them (yourself, because it isn't worth the money to have them done).

BUt its hard to believe that a chevy 5.0 can only come from the factory with just 140 HP ! Thats not anything . I cant believe it could get that low. i was thinking at worse.. maybe 170 HP. well im not doubting you but in my opinion i really dont think it started with just 140 HP. I think it started prolly near 180-170'ish and is probably near 220-230 by now.

ps: how much do new aluminum or just new good heads Improve HP ?

Re: Re: Re: Re: how much horsepower ?

Heads are the best way to make hp, if u have a good set of heads that flow good u can really build big hp with a few other mods like a good cam, intake, carb, headers, and a good catback. But don't forget to upgrade the trans, rearend, and suspension.

hmm... what are catbacks ? and replacing heads usually arent that hard.. right ? I think you just take off the valve covers and unbolt the head bolts and it slides right off.... I think.
