Idle surging? idle problems

My mom has a 1992 elantra and at idle the rpms rise and fall...sometimes stalls...
I guess my question is... would this be idle surge? What would cause this to happen and what are things I can check for that might cause it?
Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Another side question is...The engine is an 1800 and looks almost identicle to a 4G63turbo in an eclipse/talon/laser... is it basically the same just smaller? I know it isn't a turbo.. duh... but when I popped the hood I just about shit cause it looks just like the one in my old eclipse spyder...

2001 elantra 70K miles. I had similar problems with my car...However, my car soon threw fault codes (check engine light), eventually lead me to the wiring leading to the IDLE SPEED CONTROL unit. One of the wires was broken and would cause erratic idle and eventual stalling when coming to stops....If your car is not throwing codes, then it could be various other problems, ie. air intake system, alternator, throttle control...

As for the simiarity in with the mitsubishi...i know that earlier hyundai models shared significant hardware with mitsubishi motors, but couldn't tell you if it is the same as the eclipse.

good luck

Re: Idle surging? idle problems

Gidday. I'm new to this site. I have a '98 Elanta (called Lantra in Australia) and have the same idle problems. Can you tell me where this idle speed control unit or throttle position sensor is located please?
Thanks.
