Turn signal won't work

The turn signal on my '72 Super Beetle stopped working. The alternator light comes on when I move the trun signal lever. It started as an intermittant problem but has become full time now. The Emergency Flasher still works which makes me think it's not the flasher relay. I have checked all the bulbs, fuses, and wiring for shorts and all looks ok. I've had the turn signal stop working before but never with the alt. light coming on. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
