First polishing attempt and i have ruined it, please help me!!!
First it happened when i tried to polish the body, good luck that i have started from bumper - had to re spray only it. I decided that it was a single problem and won't happen again. But now i decided to try it on the wing, i had a dust under the clear coat, so i sanded the area with 2000 grit wet paper, put a little Tamiya Copound on the cloth, gently rubbed the surface and please see what happened
http://evo6.sitecity.ru/album_2512172139.phtml?pix=11 The shiny areas inside the matt areas is the paint layer under the clear coat. So Compound just dissolved the clear coat like solvent. When i was rubbing the area with cloth it felt like you rubbing a wet paint (sticky) The clear coat had more than month to dry, i was gentle i used a little of compound - i did everything as it described in the FAQ ![]() I am absolutely frustrated, if i am not able to polish my models it's useless to go on hobby, please help me

Re: First polishing attempt and i have ruined it, please help me!!!
What kind of paint did you use, acrylic, enamel or laquer? Different paints reacts in different ways. I for instance had no luck trying to polish out a Tamiya acrylic paint job. After over one year, yes...one year it still got like chewing gum as soon as I tried to polish it out. Enamel should be fine after a months drying time but you never know if it maybe needs a little more time to set properly?
Laquer is more reliable and normaly polishes out very nice after one or two weeks drying time. It really looks like it dissolved as you said, don't know why if it's not acrylic clear on top. I know some people work with acrylics and put out amazing paint jobs, but I can't do that so I have given up on these and use mostly laquers today. Don't let this stop you from building models, regard it as a minor set back and tackle the problem again. Mayby someone else can more clearly point you in the right direction. Good luck! Niclas |

acrylics and enamels are much softer and "weaker" compared to lacquer... at least from my experience. The best way to go with car bodies is lacquer

A good clear coat in my opinion is Modelmaster's Metalizer sealer. It goes over enamel without problems and it dries pretty quick. It stinks like h*** though.
On this link you can see one of my cars with MM's clear on top. Polished with mircromesh and Baremetal foils plastic polish. No problems at all and by now this car is about 5-6 years old and still looks good. Just let it dry for 2-4 weeks before any atempts to polish. Come to think of it, the blue on your Calsonic was that also enamel? I ask because I had some strange reactions when I put enamel on top of Tamiyas spray laquer...it wont stick properly and even Tamiya masking tape would lift it off. Niclas |

The body color is Tamiya TS paint from spray can. Maybe there are some other compounds besides Tamiya?

Re: First polishing attempt and i have ruined it, please help me!!!
There is a lot of products you can use to polish a paint job. Almost any automotive polish/rubbing will work, test it on a scrap piece first so it wont destroy your paint work.
On this one I tried an automotive polish and rubbing to achieve a really shiny surface and the good thing is....if it doesn't work on the models you can always use it on your 1/1-car instead. ![]() The Starliner is painted all TS-colours and the maroon has no clear coats on. But as I already wrote, it's not working very good to put enamel on the TS-range of colours. It shouldn't disslove like it did for you but it's not adhering very good on that base. Leaving it for a couple of week more and try polishing again. Good luck! Niclas |
