Help with Air!

My air conditioner is blowing hot and it is starting to make me mad. I tried to recharge the system but it really didn't work to well. My compressor kickes on and off about every 2 seconds. Unfortunatly to charge the system you need the compressor to be on. What could be the problem?

The compressor is short cycling due to low freon levels.
The first thing to find out is why your AC lost the freon charge. Have your vehicle checked by a qualified mechanic.

It may just be a simple seal, or something else requiring big money.

But to get you cool air once again. You can buy a cheap charging hose and a 1 pound can of freon. Turn your AC to the highest setting. Hook up the can of freon and charge the system. After the can of freon, check to see if the comressor has stopped short cycling. If it has, check the temperature coming from your AC vents. If it is cold enough, don't add any more. If it is still warm, add 1 more can. This is not recommended due to the possiblity of overcharging the system without a proper set of gauges.

This will get you cool air at the very least. I would however ask you to have the AC system check by a qualified mechanic.

Good Luck!

Re: Help with Air!

Once you start filling it the cycling will stop.

Fill the system with one of these available at interdynamics. They are available at Autozone.

Also fill with the AC on MAX and the fan on high.

You don't want to bypass anything. Just add the freon, you will soon see that the compressor will stop short cycling.

Don't worry about the compressor until after you've added the first can of freon.

Make sure you're adding the correct freon. If your truck has R12, you're out of luck. You'll have to convert your system to R134a. R12 is no longer available for the backyard mechanic.

R12 retrofitting kits.

All you have to do is get the R12 evacuated for free from a AC service center. They just love to take your R12 for nothing.

R12 ended with the '95 models.

2000 Blazers are R134a.

Re: Re: Help with Air!

Thanks guys! My air is blowing ICE COLD! The compressor was shutting off because it had a low charge. Now it is up and running perfectly, thanks again.

Yip, and I have a BIG PROBLEM WITH YOU RELEASING R12 INTO THE ENVIRONMENT.

You do know that some government officials do patrol these boards and they will see this and can track you down and have a nice intimate conversation with you and your lawyer as they hand you a large fine.

If anyone witnesses you doing that, you could be fined and put into jail.

Re: Help with Air!

*Nods* Used refrigerant should be reclaimed and recycled, no matter the grade. Intentionally releasing refrigerant into the atmosphere is severely frowned upon, even the "reformulated" R-134a which is supposed to be more environmentally friendly. If you have a leak, you have a leak, and that cannot be avoided. However, releasing any kind of refrigerant into open air is a serious federal no-no. If you goofed up a recharge or overcharged your coolant - please see a mechanic. The shop will have a machine that will remove and store the waste refrigerant for reclaimation.
