2005 silverado w/ XM Commander
I recently joined the ranks as a happy silverado owner. The truck is just a plain jane extended cab truck. It has just the am/fm stereo. Does anyone know if it has AV jacks on the back of the stereo to plug in the XM commanders FM modulator? If not do they make a factory stereo for this truck that has AV jacks on the back of it? If so a link or price would be great.
Thanks. |

No jacks on the plain jane AM/FM. Yes GM, has a factory XM ready stereo, but I wouldn't know a link, or price. Your local parts dept should be able to help, or check on Ebay. Nice to know some people are still willing to by Plain Jane. This one started out that way last July. One of the add-ons is a Pioneer stereo, and a XM Roady.

This kit uses a pass-thru connector to the radio, works just like GM oem kit, band button changes radio from FM to AM to XM. Install is an easy 30-45 minute operation, depending on how long it takes you to get things apart and back together.

Re: 2005 silverado w/ XM Commander
If your wanting XM radio with the stereo you hav in your truck now, I would suggest a Roadie 2. They are ususally under $100 and take about 20 minutes to install. Everything you need is in the kit, as the reciever has a built-in FM transmitter that lets you choose your choice of stations to broadcast the XM to. I'm actually running a special on them right now. $65 installed. Then you pay the monthly fee.

xm commander
I haven't had good luck with the Roadie2, the reception isn't that good. I did get an XM commander last night, but no on the search for a headunit with AV jacks on it. THat won't be hard to find, but what is the cost for a harness for an aftermarket stereo?

the commander does not need av jacks. its a fm modulator is plugs into your antenna. you will need to get 2 antenna adapters for it though. u need 1 to go little to big and then 1 for big to little. they are usually aroung 8-15 depends on where u get them. any stereo shop should have them. then u put it on a station such as 88.3 fm and then turn commander on and it plays on the radio. its very easy to hook up.

probably if you have a radio that has auxilary inputs on it. i would just use the wired fm mod and be done. the sound quality is really not bad with a wired mod.

Yeah I worked at Best Buy in the install bay and we always used the wireless fm mod. It works just fine, I use the same thing in my truck. When you run the antenna I went through the 3rd brake light and across the back of the headliner down the a-pillar and up under the dash. Or just go through the fire wall and up the weather stripping on the door or windshield. DO NOT RUN THE WIRE THROUGH THE DOOR JAMB IT WILL CUT IT EVENTUALLY AND THEN YOU WILL

wired up but issues
I got the XM Commander and got it wired up. When the truck is in acc. or just on battery XM doesn't work. It only works when the truck is running. It has to be a wiring problem, but I'm not sure which one? THe 3 wires on the XM are yellow (battery) red/yellow(ACC+) and Black (Ground) I have the Ground going to a screw with metal behind it for a solid ground. I have the yellow going to the orange wire on the stock HU and the red/yellow going to the yellow wire on the stock HU...what's wrong? I swapped the 2 wires and XM doesn't work at all...so the red/yellow has to be right, but is the orange wire on the stock hU not the battery? What color is the battery wire on an extended cab 2005 silverado...

Re: 2005 silverado w/ XM Commander
You mean the wire behind the factory radio?
Switched 12 volts is yellow. Constant 12 volts is orange. There are 2 yellow wires also, one is a rear speaker wire, so if you use the "hot" one, be sure to use the one thats close to orange.

Re: 2005 silverado w/ XM Commander
Be sure your commander is getting a constant 12 volts the whole time. I personally would run new wire to the fuse box for the switched wire, and run a new fused wire to the battery for the constant. This is what I do when I install them, but I get paid for it therefore I HAVE to make sure it works and looks good.

Re: 2005 silverado w/ XM Commander
Thanks for the help. It looks really good, the working part is another story
I'll dig out the ol' multimeter and check the voltage.
