who is moderator, enthusiast, regular or newbie

im kind of new to this forum...can anyone tell me how the people in this forum get status of moderator, enthusiast, regular, or newbie...dont know if i missed any....also is there a general forum for friends of mine to use to get answers for general problems....i showed my Dad this site and he likes it...he has a Hyundai , but didnt see alot of info on his model....he may have a few general or specific questions but would not be good for him to come to a forum specific to Grand Prix or Ford Mustang etc....any suggestions ...thanks

thanks Mike, i was just curious...i try not to post a reply to someones question unless i think im pretty sure that im right....if i hear something similar to what ive had ill tell them that i had same problem and tell them my outcome....i once had a 1983 Caddy Eldorado Biaritz...carriage top...rolls royce grill...spare tire on the rear bumper...my girlfriend was driving it and car over heated , she stopped at gas station and the attendant told her there was a problem and she should drive to the service station about 10 blocks away she made it about 4 blocks and blew the motor (HT4100)....bad advice blew this motor(and female driving)...but i later learned the 4100 was 1 of the worst motors ever made and usually gets replaced by the Toronado 350

Re: who is moderator, enthusiast, regular or newbie

yea i do exactly the same, i dont wanna be giving bad advice and/or information unless im tottaly sure. im starting to have a big interest in cars and im learning alot from this site and i enjoy messing around with things that i know how to fix on a car. i once had a CLEAN 1988 box chevy caprice with a mint interior and nice paint job, it was mechanicly sound too with only 55k miles when i bought it, but the trunk leaked when it rained and the rust was hidden all under the panel below the back window, it would have cost probably at least $1,000 to fix the RIGHT way, and the rear glass would have had to be removed also to fix it, so i just sold it to a friend who could afford to do the neccesary repairs.

Mike is correct, your status changes with the number of posts. I am an ASE certified parts guy and work on all my own vehicles. I give advice based on experience, and try to steer people in the right direction. I would never purposefully steer people wrong, and hold myself to a high level of integrity. Look for those that post often and use good english, that way you're listening to an intelligent individual that is trying to help.

Speaking of good or bad English the phrase that really gets me is:

"My bad"

I've seen it used a lot by the young ones on AF.

Re: who is moderator, enthusiast, regular or newbie

I have to agree that bad English is one of the problems with this forum. I try to use words and not acronyms and I try not to abreviate unless I am certain that they will be understood.

As for becoming a moderator you must be nominated by other moderators and they decide if you are capable of handling the responsibility.

I have to say that the members that post in the Pontiac forum are some of the most intellegent and well spoken folks on the forum. You all make my job very easy!

Re: who is moderator, enthusiast, regular or newbie

Some of the responsibilities are to keep members in line, such as watching for bad or vulgar language, to watch for members who verbally attack other members, watch out for spam and to offer information to members concerning their problems with their vehicles. The job pays zip, zero, zilch, nada!!! It is however a lot of fun and sometimes a real pain in the rear. Usually the criteria for selection is based on forum need, review of the information that you post and how well you know the vehicle line that you are moderating.

Of course I am the first one to admit that I am not the all seeing all knowing moderator and I certainly don't know everything about cars. I rely on other members in the forum to help me with my job and they are quite a help to me!

He does do a good job. The best thing about GTP Dad is his position on dealers. Unlike other Mods who defend their practices at all costs. I won't mention the Mods name.

BTW - Jim, don't hold your breath on the total posts. He manages a lot of other forums too.
