oil change indicator
I have a 2005 4WD 1500, the digital odometer tells me to change oil every time I start. I changed the oil and filter, but it won't reset. How do you reset it? And don't tell that the dealer has to do with a mastertech scanner that cost $6000. So is oil changing no longer a do it yourself repair? Does it void the warranty changing your own oil?

Re: oil change indicator
Key in the run position w/ engine off, floor the gas 3 times in five seconds. Oil Life Reset will show on the dash for 10 seconds. Have a poke through your owner's manual afterwards

Thanks, I will try that. The owner's manual says that the dealer must reset. But I just have a hard time beleiveing it. So I choose to ignore the manual (hoping they are wrong or just brain washing you to have authorized dealer's perform every service possible) |

Thanks ApeOr, That worked just like you said it would. How did you figure that out? The manual sure didn't tell you.

Re: oil change indicator
The older trucks (like my '02) have it printed in the manual.

Re: oil change indicator
2005 Manual has it too..........the dealer rep was kind enough to bookmark all the FAQ's most people have about the trucks in it for me when I bought it. I read the stinkin' thing just for the heck of it anyway front to back though.

Does anyone know how the indicator tracks oil life? It's only showing 40% and I'm coming up on 5K miles on my last synthetic change. It used to show around 80% when I got to 3K on regular oil.

Re: oil change indicator
The system does not use an actual measurement of the oil. The system is based on how many revolutions and various other factors to determine oil life, the oil itself actually has nothing to do with it. You couldn't pay me to leave regular motor oil in there for 8-10k miles!

Re: oil change indicator
Dude! I don't even have the percentage indicator. I've gone 5300 miles since my last change though, and I'm just waiting for the "change me" message to come up. I'm running Mobil 1 synthetic, but the indicator isn't supposed to know the difference from what I've read. It just tracks several different parameters on how the engine is being used. I remember total rpms, and temp are 2 of them. I would imagine peak rpms is in there somewhere also.

Re: oil change indicator
I'm waiting for the day when they don't give you a manual. It will just be a CD/DVD that you just throw in your ride and chapter along to the info your looking for. I'm guess that's a long ways away though...
I agree I change my Oil every 3-4500 Kms. Oil is cheap engine parts aren't.

The length of time the vehicle goes before the reminder comes on is compiled from a lot of sophisticated data. I read a different thread on it, and found it very interesting. Milage has nothing to do with it. The vehicles today are very smart. My indicator in the truck ended up coming on close to 5,000 miles, which is fine with me using Mobil One. My wife's Grand Prix went about 9k before the oil life indicator showed it was due. That's too far for me, but it was interesting letting the monitor go to see how long it took.
