Dipstick is broken?

My g/f took her car to Wal-mart for an oil change. When she comes to pick up the car they tell her they can't do one because her dipstick is broken. HTF does a dipstick break? And what will something like this cost to fix?

Re: Dipstick is broken?

the dipstick?!?!? go to a junk yard and get one for like $5. might be like $10 if it's the tube and all. It basically O-rings in, and has like 1 or 2 screws to hold it to the block. Depending if it broke inside the block (either one, tube or stick) it should be fairly easy to remove.

For the stick - Remove the dipstick tube and pull the stick out of the hole in the block.

For the tube - may take some extra work, but thinking about it, if it broke off at the block, perhaps trying a screw in the tube might work, or needle nose pliers or even snap ring pliers inside the tube to help pull it out.

REMEMBER!!!!! after doing this change the oil again to avoid any shavings or contaminents from ruining your engine. AND, NEVER go to wal-mart for an oil change when it takes less time and money to do it yourself, besides, you win points with the girlfriend if you do things for her.
