Inspection sticker..

I have a question,

When you get your car to be inspected annually, under what circumstance car must be inspected for? I need to know it so I don't have to pay for unecessary work in the future, or some shop is trying to rip me off.

In texas they just test lights, horn, and insurance. I'm not real sure if thats what you were asking or what, hard to understand.

In NYS, every vechile is required to get it inspected, am I correct? So when you purchase a brand new car, you're required to have the car inspected within 10 days after you registered your car.

I just need to know if anyone here is from NY. Thanks.

Yes. I'm pretty sure that it's within 10 days, but most dealers will do it as part of delivery...NYS isn't the best to pass inspection if your car isn't new, or reliable. A recent law requires all inspection stations to install a dedicated phone line which goes to the Albany (state capitol); when you bring in your car for inspection, the inspector hooks up any OBDII cars to the comp, and any and all codes are forwarded to Albany through the phone line. You cannot pass inspection until the check engine light is off, and any codes have their problems taken care of....

How are they getting ripped off? I should have made my opinion more clear in the original post...I really have nothing against what the state is requiring what it does to pass, but I do have a problem with the state making it so expensive and not allowing shops to get the equipment...my school for instance had to give up their inspection lisence because the new system was way too costly.
While it is slightly offtopic, there was one portion of the law which I do feel is a little questionable; when the tech submits everything to Albany, he receives back a report about whether or not the person that the car is registered to has any outstanding warrants; if he does, then the tech is supposed to call 911 so that the owner can be arrested. I have no problem with arresting people with outstanding warrants, but asking service techs to do that is ridiculous IMO...just my

Never heard of that one, and your right it is not the job of a mechanic to call the cops, expecially when I know a few mechanics who have warrents themself lol. I also dont understand what you mean by us gettinr ripped off. Emissions is a pain in the ass, but it is there for a purpose. I'm sure the reason that they required the direct link is because shops will pass cars that shouldnt be passed, and that kinda put a stop to that for the most part. They didnt do it to see if you did 15 over the speed limit coming home last night (yet).

That wasn't my original question and you went way off topic. The question is, as for NYS inspection requirement, what need the car to be inspected for? Muffler, lights, horns, and what else? That way Firestone won't be able to rip me off. Last year I paid 340.00 for MINOR repairs, or un-necessary work. You get my point..

Aside from the emissions, it's basically just a safety inspection...the things you listed, brakes, brake line condition, tire tread, fuel line condition; really, just anything that should cause an accident or be a safety hazard to your or other drivers.

Any sales person could rip anyone off. My friend is a mechanic and he knew that it doesn't need to be repaired. He looked at the paper and he said one word "bullshzt". Of course, their main objective is to maximize their profits.
