just bought 85 golf, lowbeams not working

I just bought an 85 diesel golf off ebay and have a lot of work to do on it. can't wait but i'm a newbie. i'll be on this forum a lot.for now i want to get the lowbeams working. they don't work on either side but the highbeams do. i'm not sure where this problem stems from and before i buy lowbeam bulbs want to know if its something else. could both of the lowbeam bulbs be no good or is it something else like a switch? i've got the bentley manual which kicks ass but all the info i can get would be much appreciated.
thanks

Re: just bought 85 golf, lowbeams not working

I too have an 85 golf, and the low beams stopped working as well. Car is fine otherwise except for the fact that the low beams dont come on at all. Aswell, the high beams only stay on if i hold the lever... (they dont lock on the on position) I know the fuses are ok. but what could it be?? Anyone know for certain?
