Summer Storm Destruction (56k warning)

It was storming all day, and so I come home from dinner to find this:

Another angle

Another angle

Another angle

Where the lightning hit

Another angle

It landed on a small pine tree we have, but I think it will survive

And it came dangerously close to the fence and our neighbor's shed. Luckily nothing was damaged.

It looks like a lot of work, so we're thinking of a tree removal service. Guess I'll be looking into that tomorrow.

Bah, I got a couple 'o chainsaws and a truck.

That happened to me once too, except it was at night and it fell on our house, did some damage to our entry way but it was so loud and scared the shit out of me, i went up to the window to see what it was but it was so dark out that I couldn't see out the window. My parents came home and told me that there was a tree right up against the window, hence why I couldn't see out it.

Re: Summer Storm Destruction (56k warning)

Meh. We've had that happen before, not because of lightning though. Our house is surrounded by MASSIVE douglas fir trees, some more than 100 feet tall, and every few years one will come down in a windstorm. In like '97 or so one almost smashed our neighbors house. Missed by inches. Later, one totally obliterated our deck and hot tub. This past year, half of one came down and smashed all of our favorite bushes.

Go buy an 18" homelite chainsaw at home depot and save yourself alot of money. It'll be like getting a free chainsaw.

Wow. You should feel lucky that it didn't kill anybody. I like the chainsaw idea too.

?!Tree service?!?!? Hell, at our house we'd have a chainsaw party and have it cut up for firewood in a couple of hours.

I couldn't really see what happened. Could I get another angle?

That's pretty amazing to me.

what's with the blurry shots, maaaaaaate?

had that happen once too. the medium-sized maple tree in the front yard of our old house was hit so badly that it split directly down the centre of the trunk. this was at about 10 at night, and it knocked out all the power in our area. so at 10:30 at night, we went outside and half of our neighbourhood was gathered around our driveway watching the fire-fighters remove the tree from our yard. we went back to bed, but forgot that we'd left all the lights on (since the power was out), so we were rudely awoken at 3am by all the lights turning on, once they reconnected the power.

i also have an old willow tree beside our pond at this house that seems to be very brittle. it loses at least one big branch every year i'd say, most of them simply from wind. i call it the leper tree now.

I Had a Tree fall on my house during a Blizzard a couple of years ago. it took 4 of us with chainsaws to get it off the house, Luckily most of the force hit the tree beside it and it was just resting against my roof..

LOL at Menards we there's a guy that buys a lawn mower in the spring and returns it in the fall...every year. So I'm pretty sure he could get away with it using a chain saw.

Actually it's just PS distortion from heavily increasing the brightness and contrast. All those pics were taken at night, the same darkness as in the last couple of shots. But the first few pics were unrecognizable without increasing the brightness.

And we don't have a fireplace, so no point in wasting our effort. If anyone lives in Illinois and wants some free firewood, it's all yours
