2003 Altima Oil Filter

Does anyone know why the oil filter for the 2003 Altima 3.5 is so small?
It looks like there is plenty of room for a larger filter. This thing is less than half the size of the filters I have had on every other vehicle I have owned.

Re: 2003 Altima Oil Filter

Used oil filters are hazardouse waste. Federal law requires manufacture's to continue reduction of hazardous waste and conserve our natural resources. Smaller oil filters, less oil in the crankcase, synthetic lubricants, and extended service intervals are some of the noticable advances that reduce pollution. Improved air filters and intake systems with computer controlled fuel injected engines that are more fuel efficient help keep motor oil a lot cleaner than carburated engines.

I own a Maxima and an Altima. If you look at the part numbers for nissan you will notice that almost every vehicle uses the same oil and air filter.
