Exhaust Cutout?

Well, my friend and I went to meet her friend and the guy has a crazy fucking mustang.....347(49??) stroker built 500whp all that good shit. He had an electric exhaust cutout. I did some searching and they aren't that expensive, but I was wondering what the benifits would be? I know turbo spool, and some HP, anything else really? asides scaring the shit out of everyone when I open it up Anyone have any experiance with these? Less than $200 sounds like a deal to me...

Re: Exhaust Cutout?

I have read pretty good things about it on tuners, so I would think it would work perfectly.

I wanted to put that on my stock downpipe, so I wouldnt need an aftermarket one but what do others think about that?

It's a shot in the dark. The stock downpipe bend is fairly restrictive, but not all that more restrictive than the stock o2 housing, which is just a foot away from it or so. My exhaust currently utilizes the stock downpipe bend, with 2.5" pipe welded on after that. I really don't know if I'm losing a lot of power because of it or not.

A lot of people seem to think that the cat is the most restrictive part of the stock exhaust. Chances are you'll sacrifice some hp running the stock downpipe, but probably not a huge amount.

Re: Exhaust Cutout?

A cutout will replace the need for a catback, you'll still want a new downpipe if you're going for equal power to a full exhaust. Then it's a few pennies less than a full exhaust, and leak prone.

Re: Exhaust Cutout?

I think the best setup would be 2.5" DP, 2.5" high flow cat, and stock catback, for a system like this. The standard 2.5" DP piping will make welding in the cutout easier. The highflow cat will open things up during normal driving, and the stock catback will keep it quiet. With the cutout open, you've got the larger DP and thats it. I thought about doing something like this on te EVO, but in the end I just decided to drop the tock exhaust in one piece and just swap it in for inspections. Its also not very loud despite being 3" (an extra perforated core presilncer is included) so I dont have to worry about the cops like I did in my 2g. In fact, the problem with the cops and the 2g is what had me thinking about doing this cutout thing in the first place. I should also note that in this state any type of cutout can be considered illegal. It used to be ok to have manual cutouts, just not the ones you can control from in the car. But that has changed I guess...
