97 Sable AC Clutch Removal

I'm replacing the AC clutch assembly in my 97 Sable. I have the pulley removed but still need to remove the electromagnetic ring. I'm thinking its just pressed on but wanted to check before I start prying.

How is the electromagentic ring attached to the compressor?

Yes, it is pressed on. Pry a little here, a little there and it pops right off.

Now how do I get the replacement pressed back on?

Re: 97 Sable AC Clutch Removal

Use a rubber or hard plastic hammer and If I remember right its one 8 or 10mm bolt that holds it on.Make sure you use a feeler guage and shim the gap clearence between clutch and compressor if you want it to last at.You should be able to get the spec. for your car by calling your local ford dealer or even driving there and asking if they can quickly look it up for you.Hope this helps.

Re: 97 Sable AC Clutch Removal

Sorry I meant to say the gap between the clutch and pulley not the compressor.

Thanks for the advice. I have the spec on the gap. It 0.020" to 0.035" for this compressor. There are shims included in the kit.

I'm not sure I can get a swing at it with a hammer to seat the electromagnet. I didn't disconnect the compressor from the AC lines so there isn't much room. I can tilt it down some. I'll see if that will give me enough room to tap it on.

I was hoping I could draw it up with the clutch plate and bolt but it isn't going on.

Thanks again!

This was a complete pain. I could tap on it a little with a hammer and got it seated about half way. Then I got an 18" bar clamp and pulled it the rest of the way. A bar clamp is a little light for this job. A 12" C-clamp would have been better but my local hardware store didn't have one that big.

Anyway, progress is happening. Thanks.
