Question 95 escort engine noise

my buddy came over we started the car he felt the exhaust as car was running itwas sputtering like the engine was running less a cylinder. could something timing wise caused a bent valve which is causing the loss of power and the noise ?

Timing is set by the car's computer so it should be right on. To check for a bad valve you need to run a compression test.
