Question 4WS Problem

I've been working on my VR4 quite a bit lately and the point came around to examine the 4-wheel steering. Me and my buddy were checking it out today. The car was parked and the wheel was cranked in both directions several times, but to no avail; the rear tires were not moving. My buddy spotted the rear steering bracket, but he said he couldn't see that moving, either. I drove around in the cul-de-sac in a circle a few times and the same thing, he said he couldn't see them turn with the front tires. I've been searching the internet all day and I haven't been able to find a single topic on 4WS problems. Also, my 4WS oil seems to be fine, according to the instrument cluster, but where is oil added in case it's low and does it use PSF or ATF?

Thank you for the help!

Re: 4WS Problem

First of all ur not gonna see them move by the car just sittin running an u turning the wheel all the way, Second you wont see them move driving in a slow circle either - u have to be going 60mph or more for the aws to start working yes its speed rated anything over 60mph the aws starts functioning.

Hope that answers your question- sounds like u have nothing to worry about. Good Luck!

Re: 4WS Problem

Thank you for the response

Actually, the reason I wanted to know was because I was told recently that the 4WS works if you are going 30 MPH or slower in order to take shaper turns with less headache. This is my only current car (as in a back and forth to work and such) and I haven't taken many high speed turns at all; if I do, I can't pay attention to the rear tires due to keeping my eyes on the road.

Thanks again! Cheers!

Re: 4WS Problem

ya, you won't see or even feel the 4WS kick in. it operates only at high speeds, above 32 mph if i remember correctly. And the 4WS system is not a pinion system like the front steering system. 4WS is a fluid pressure system. So it takes a certain pressure build-up in the fluid to activate the rear steering mechanism, hence the operation only above a certain speed. Also, the rear tires only turn 2.5 degrees maximum. Though this does help at high speeds when cornering or better yet when weaving on the highway or on a road course, you would not feel its effects at low speeds.

the only way i can think of to test for its proper function is to put the car on a lift or 4 jack stands, take it up to about 40+ mph, turn the steering wheel and check to see any gradual turning in the rear tires. ***NOTE: this probably isn't a very safe thing to do.***

don't worrt about the 4WS. its most likely works just fine. i've never heard of it not working. i have only heard of people removing it b/c it only turns the rear wheels a max. 2.5 degrees, and so they will remove the pump and lines to save like 10 lbs in weight.

Re: 4WS Problem

Its 30mph and above, and its same phase with 1.5 degrees of turning. Its basicly for high speed lane changes.

Re: 4WS Problem

Its 30, there is a PS pump in the rear diff that only builds up enough presure when above 30. I dunno where I read it, but thats what it is.
