ABS or brake pads?

I have an intermitent problem with my brakes. When pulling up to a stopsign, sometimes it will shudder just before it stops and I will here a slight grinding noise. This dosen't happen all the time just once every couple of days. I pulled the wheels off and the pads look like they have at least half of their life left. There aren't any ABS or brake lights comming on so its starting to piss me off. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check your ball joints, steering stuuf, struts, arms.. etc. (I'm not technical with carstuff) This happened to me, right after having my brakes done, and it kept grinding and shuddering, turned out not to be the brakes at all, but something to do with a ball joint or somthing like that (hey ask me to make a robot or programme a something, I'm king) just a newbie slowly learning the ropes of his truck. (did I mention the passenger side wheel fell off because of this?)
