Transmission Output Shaft Broken

Hi everybody, I have a drivetrain question that I would love to get some help with! My Explorer is a '97 with 4.0 V6 4X4 and 5 speed manual transmission. I have removed my transfer case to see that output shaft (I'm assuming this part is called an output shaft) between the back of my transmission and the front of my transfer case has been sheared in half. My question is: Can I remove the output shaft without dropping the transmission?

Also, while the explorer used to be functioning and on the road it was pretty hard to shift, especially in 3rd and 4th gears. I don't know if this is likely an internal transmission problem or a shifter problem, but I'm hoping to solve both problems while I have some of this stuff somewhat disassembled.

Any ideas or advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Brandon

Sorry, you are in for a transmission rebuild. Put a new clutch in while you are at it.
