EngineService Soon lamp came on
anyone know if changing the muffler or dropin K&N Air filter could cause the service engine soon lamp to come on? my G's only 5,000miles old and it came on today. pisses me off.

Have you checked all the fluids? It could be just the contact between the wires thats making it turn on, so get it check out, might not even be anything wrong with the engine.

most likely your gas cap is not tight.

thanx for your input guys. yah, I checked basic connections and fluid levels especially the coolant. they all look good. the gas cap is tight with 3 clicks.
it came on after a few hard launches, but that souldn't do it, right? it was about 93F and humid today in chicago. |

btw, does the 'service engine soon' lamp go off automatically after it senses that the engine returned to its normal condition, or does the dealer have to turn it off or reset it after a diagnosis?
man, such a pain taking it into the shop for repairs. not to forget that I have to take in another car this week for regular inspections and oilchange. thanx. |

called up the dealer today regarding this service engine light. guy told me to drive it around for a couple of days. the light should go off automatically. if it doesn't go off by thursday, i'm to call in for an appointment for a diagnosis. he said that fluctuations in fluid levels sometimes causes (rarely) the light to come on as it just has too many sensors.
so, will followup on thurs.

The service engine light is on because you changed the filter or exhaust. One thing though, did you make it like a CAI?
Anyway, the newfound resources which you have added may have caused your light to come on. Just reset the ecu and you should be fine. It just has to adjust to new settings.

thanks for the info, btw what's a CAI? please elaborate.
to reset the ECU, just unplug the black wire from the battery, wait 15 minutes, put it back on? thanx for your help.

thanx for the info on how to reset the ECU and the info on CAI. I'll give it a shot if the check engine light doesn't go off after a few days. I heard that after the engine is started 15 times the 'service engine' light goes off. hummm...
is this so? or is it 'learning' the new environment with in the 50-200miles?the intake is stock, it's just the K&N drop-in air filter. if it is anything, it *could* be the aftermarket muffler, but not sure... you guys get a 'service engine' light after changing just the muffler? usually not, right? just curious thanks

I have an aftermarket exhaust and a JWT intake...
check engine light hasn't so much as blinked.

Sorry - I should have said 50 times. It only goes out if the problem is no longer present and you have started the car 50 times with no further problems being detected. 50 times is a lot which is why people reset the ECU. Most of you guys are reseting the ECU routinely after mods anyway I think.

damn, I was sitting in the parking lot starting and stopping...starting and stopping the engine. man, thought 15x wasn't so bad, but 50x? ya sure it ain't 150x or 550x? da da da damn, I'm gonna have to reset the ECU. gahahhahaha.

Yeah - you do that. Read off the warning code when you do, and post it back to the forum for discussion. Remember the code is indicated by flashing indicator lights and the engine warning light itself flashing. You can look up the meaning of the code from the http://www.sr20de.net site so that you know what to expect. If you fitted an exhaust header you may have a problem with the sensor fitting for example. The other guys know a lot more about it than me!
