speaker selection

i was checking info online about speaker selection for my 99 passport. very miniaml it seems

crutchfield says that only one of their 4" speakers will fit in the back. has anyone tried any other speaker s for their ride?

so i only have about 2" of depth in all of the speaker wells? is this correct?

what are you running?

I'll second that post, I'm looking to do a stereo and speaker upgrade for my 1999 Rodeo S model 4x4. Any speaker and stereo/CD recommendations will help! Thanks!

Hey guys,

Stereos in the Rodeo/Passport are tricky because of the limited products available. And everybody has their own opinions on what works best and what sounds best.

There are not many things I dislike about my rodeo, but the small size of the rear speakers is one of them. You can go bigger, but you need some skill. A competant shop will be able to do it, but at a price. When it comes to 4" speakers, none are going to boom or sound great.

Crutchfield is great, but you'd have better luck going to a local auto stereo store.

My opinion is simple. If you want to have a good sounding system, get a new head unit, all new speakers and a small amp that will fit in the back storage area or under the seat. I do not have my amp in my Rodeo, but I wish I could. I am fearful it will get stolen. I plan on getting a cheaper smaller type amp and hiding it in my ride and running all the speakers to it. In my last two cars I had an amp running all the speakers and a sub, and it was awesome. Sounded like a concert hall. An amp will even make the 4" speakers soung better.

In my Rodeo I have a nice head unit and four nice speakers, plus the tweeters. In my opinion, it sounds terrible. It needs an amp.

Another problem with these vehicles, they are loud, with poor sound-proofing. If you are ambitious, sound-proof a little. I am not ambitious. If you want to replace the rear speakers for better sound and do not run an amp, you will be disappointed. You will not notice a change with new speakers in there, at least I didn't.

Also, on the subject of amps, people think they are for thunderous bumping fools. Well they are, but they are also for people who want crisper sounding car audio. When I am on the highway with the windows down, I can barely hear anything. I need an amp, and I may have just talked myself into getting one. Thanks guys.

I run a Clarion VRX-815 for a head unit. This unit contains its own amplifier so I dont need a separate amp for the front and rear speakers. Up front I run 5.25" JL Audio TR series. In back I have 4" JL Audio TR series. Finally I topped it off with a 12" JL Audio 12w3v2 pushed by an Alpine MRP-M350 amplifier.

With my front speakers, I took off the oem speaker grills and use the ones that came with the speakers so I dont have any issues with the woofer hitting the grill. Unfortunatly, you can't do that with the back speakers, so keep that in mind when tuing your stereo.

Up front i run power acoustic 4" and they sound great. Ive herd the fosgate 3 1/2" sound good 2 and also fit. As for back my rear i fitted it with 4 lanzar max 12dv 12s and 4 cyclone 1000 watt amps. With that box i had to ditch those crappy factory speakers so i got ridda them all tobather and put a pair of 6x9s in the top of the box. (it comes flush to the top of my backseat.)

I had a additional speaker box in the back of my 97 rodeo to get the sound I wanted, but since I am regulary filling that cargo area, I found that using an old trailer hitch wire connector, would let me take the box in and out within seconds. (I mean to use the connector ONLY for the speakers. Do not connect this to a trailer)

iVE INSTALLED FOR BEST BUY AND CIRCUIT CITY FOR 6 YEARS TOTAL AND NEVER RAN ACROSS A 4" SPEAKER THAT DIDNT FIT. THE VERY EXPENSIVE ONES ARE PROBABLY TOO DEEP. BUT FOR WHAT ITS WORTH Any Thing Is Better Than The Factory Speakers. Just Swap Out The 4 Inches And Get A Small Amp And Sub Itll Sound Great. No Need For Expesive Head Units And Flip Out Tv's With Built In Amps And Custom Installs.

on my 98 rodeo. This guy I work with used to do audio installation so he says he'll help me out with the install for free :-D . I'll let y'all know how it goes in a after I get them installed. In the mean time, before I get started on that, does anyone know of a good picture tutorial on how to get to the speakers in the rodeo? I know the back 2 are fairly easy to do, I've already gotten them exposed on my own. But I lost the link I found on how to get the door pannel of to expose the front speakers.

I have been installing since I was 14yrs old...Now I am 26 you do the math cuz I am tired. ANYWAY... I have worked in stores and out on my own. Currently I have a 99 Rodeo and the best speaker selection I have found was from Memphis Car Audio. In my rodeo I have Memphis M-Class 5.25 Multisync Convertible speakers in the front door, M-Class Co-Axial 5.25 in the rear roof mount, 1 Memphis M1 DVC 12" sub in a sealed box. I am using the Memphis "Baby Belle" 5 Channel Amp running it all.. Up front I have an Alpine 9857 HU.

I am looking into doing some Multimedia stuff for the people in the back...But back to topic

My setup is a little pricey for a factory replacement.. BUT Memphis has a line called Power Reference that is awesome.. For the price you pay you will get soooo much more in return sound wise for the speakers...I can personally attest to the Pow Ref Co-Axials and subs...They are great equipment at an affordable price...

Did you receive and install these speakers? If so did you have to make any mods to the doors (cutting) to make them fit and do they sound good. I tried Kenwood, Pioneers and some Sony's from Best Buy and none of them fit the screw pattern except for the Pioneers and they did not sound as good so I put the factories back in. I have since purchased a Visonic bandpass box 2/12" with a 600 watt amp, low bass for the price and overall sounds excellant. The 12's need more power definately. But I would still like to replace all of the factory speakers.
