Question Car Not Starting Please Help

Okay my cousin has a 89 rs 5.0 tbi, and he has a intermittent problem, if it's hot outside and he drives his car and parks it when he tries to start it up it doesn't, you don't even hear it trying to turn over, and it's not the vats because the security light doesn't come on. i told him i might be the starter or the solenoid. what do you guys think,

Re: Car Not Starting Please Help

i'd think your guess is a reasonable one. How old is the starter?

Re: Car Not Starting Please Help

i'm pretty damn sure it's the stock one, so it's pretty freaking old, so how hard would it be to swap out the starter and solenoid, we should swap both out at the same time right?

Re: Car Not Starting Please Help

yeah i just checked the price on the starter and it's only 55 with a core return for a ac delco starter, i didn't see how much the solenoid cost though.

Re: Car Not Starting Please Help

You'd want to replace both as a unit, as it was designed to save yourself alot of grief.

IF it is as old as you say, I stronlgy recommend some patience in breaking the old bolts free and REPLACE them. You'll see why when you're under there, and it's a loooong afternoon walking a cracked bolt out under there.

survay says ding ding ding! yes, doing both at the same time is always a good idea, that way you eliminate the problem of either one not working correctly

Yup It isnt that hard, probably hardest part is getting under there and finding the right size to take it out.
