Gear Shift lever difficulty moving into reverse

Hello,

I've had difficulty moving the gear shift lever into the Reverse position. It has been a minor nuisance since I had the car but never took the time to get it corrected because of work and schedules. Not it appears to be getting worse. I'd appreciate any advice before getting it serviced. Namely, I'd like to have some idea of the problem prior to getting screwed by the mechanic.

Thank you,

Re: Gear Shift lever difficulty moving into reverse

Year please. I am assuming this is a CV. Need to know if the shifter is loose and hard to get into reverse or is it just hard to move from park. If it feels like it is still locked in park, check the brake switch connection or the brake switch itself. If it is sloppy and loose feeling, there are 2 little bolts at the bottom of steering column inside where the shift cable attaches to the linkage. Make sure they are tight. If they are OK, shift tube bushings will wear out or the shift tube will crack. Both of these require tearing part of the steering column apart. Hope it is just the brake switch. Also if you think you are going to get screwed, go to another mechanic. There are a lot of us out there.
