Unhappy Knock Senosr

Ok, we have a "dumb blonde" in need of technical assistance....recently the "service engine soon" light came on in my 2001....knowing that it had to mean there was a malfunction, I took it to the local Auto Zone to have it tested.....found out that the "knock sensor" is testing low voltage....now not knowing exactly what that means....the man kindly told me that the problem was "not serious"...; however the light being on all the time drives me insane...as I am a female with a broken big truck....Is there anyone..that can please tell me where this "knock sensor" is located. I don't really want to take it to the chevy house...as I don't need another corn cob up my back side....so here are the spec's....2001 Chevy 1500HD 4X4....6.0 ltr V8 engine....I do hope that this is enough info...look forward to all the help!

Re: Knock Senosr

Dang, Are you sitting down for this one. I just read in my Haynes manual on how to replace those sensors and it sucks. Why would GM put them there?

You have to remove the Intake Manifold. The Knock Sensors are under the Manifold, pretty stupid hey. I can't imagine what a Stealership would charge for that job. I don't imagine it being too hard but, certainly not too fun...

I noticed the other day that my truck was occasionally pinging and was thinking about replacing the Knock Sensors. Think I'll just buy some different gas.

Re: Knock Senosr

yup, have to take the intake manifold off and there are two of them under it, its about 5hrs labor so about 400 curnells in labor, depending on your local labor rate, not including cost of the sensors.

you can try posting on some boards and see if there is a gearhead in your area that can help you out for cash

Re: Re: Knock Senosr

Now I am pulling my hair out!!! This is going to be a pain in the back side of a job to complete....I called the local Stealership and was told...that all trdcks have 2 knock sensors...(news to me...) 1 that is located under the intake manifold and 1 that is on the outside of the block near the starter....the charge for the "easy" one is $230.00 (labor) + $55.00 for the part + the cost of the antifreeze....the charge for the "difficult" on is $430.00 (labor) + $55.00 for the part + antifreeze....CAN SOMEONE PLEASE tell me what/where/how this is...Im confused...now I know why I am not mechanic for living.....

Re: Knock Senosr

(some older chevy motors have one knock sensor over the starter)
your truck has 2 under the intake manifold, all 99-05 gen 3 engines, 4.8, 5.3, 6.0L, have 2 knock sensors under the intake manifold, the sensor over the starter is the crank position sensor.

For what its worth, my truck throws this code whenever it has been sitting a while without being driven, or has been used for towing a heavy trailer, or has been driven in hilly terrain; basically anytime I ask it to work harder than usual. In each instance, I put higher grade gas in ( I normally use 87 octane), and the problem clears within a tankful. The light will even go out on its own, but to clear it faster, have the autozone guy clear the codes after 150 or so miles of driving on the good gas.

Re: Knock Senosr

had to replace mine, about 2 months ago. lucky i had extended warranty. a$500.00 JOB, cost me $50.00. i read that when you wash the engine, water collects around the knock sensors, and deteroriates them. GOOD JB GM !!!!!!!!!

Re: Knock Senosr

I have a code reader, and the code comes up whenever I read it. However, its not throwing the SES light, so I might not bother with it. It has two knock sensors anyway.

Re: Knock Senosr

This happenned on my friends '01..

We were going to replace them but decided to at least try a "home remedy"...

He ran 2 tankfuls of Supreme/101 racegas mixture (IIRC, it was an 80/20 mix) and Redline gas treatment (a whole bottle each time)

Hasn't came back on yet.. a year later...

How can water collect UNDER the intake? Aren't the sensors in the lifter valley? I am getting this fault code now....
