I'd say if it's going to be a project, any '89 and up Formula Firebird would be a good start. I'd spend more time making sure there is no rust, the wiring hasn't been hacked as seems to be the case on about 75% of these third gen. firebirds, and the mileage on the car isn't rediculously high. Anything after that is icing.

The fastest 3rd Gen models are very limited in production and are expensive to purchase. They're not worth it for regular driving- only for investments at this point. you'd be much better off buying a TPI 350 car and swapping in a 6 speed manual, as well as some other goodies to make it faster/ more reliable for high performance.

It'll also be cheaper to go this route. because, even if you did buy a limited edition car, you'd still have to upgrade most of the same parts anyhow, then you've taken a limited edition ride and made it not original (possibly huting its value)

The fastest 3rd gen F-body from GM was the '89 turbo 6 (pace car). It outperformed the Corvette that year (unless you count the ZR1 pre-production models. Officially, it came out in 1990)

However, I'm not sure about the SLP Firehawk in 1992. That may have been quicker? But, since they made so few of them, you'd have a much higher chance of finding the turbo 6, and even that won't be easy....

There's also the 1992 anniversary Camaro Z-28 with the 350/ 6 speed combo. they planned on making 602 of them in commemoration of the '67 Z, but dropped the program. I think only 2 were actually made....

My reccomendation is buy the car that looks good to you and build that up the way you want it.

Re: Fastest 3rd gen f-body?

You can get any car at any time on ebay pretty much, idk why people say it's hard to find certain cars.

Re: Fastest 3rd gen f-body?

I'm in the same boat as you. i just started a 91 formula project. 350 tpi with 110000 miles on it. i took it to the track last week, having some problems running well, and i ran 15.2@91mph. it was a very hot humid day so i'm thinking the car can maybe pull a 14.8. third gens are sweet but you'll find that the tpi setups are a big restriction on big performance. i bought my car for 2700 bucks and it was painted like last fall so theres no rust and it looks nice. i'm gonna buy a distributor, rpm performer intake, and i have a 750 carb i'm gonna buy of a buddy for 75 bucks. he also has some long tube headers for 50 bucks. so after spending maybe 250 bucks plus the price of my car all i really have left to do is heads, cam and all the other little bolt ons. i'm basically trying to build an 11 second car. so knowing that it really doesn't matter what yr you get as long as it has a 350 cause the difference is only 20hp at the crank from yr to yr and if your gonna mod it that doesn't matter. like the other dude said just get a nice shell.
