is there detailed pics of bottom of civics online?

i think i need to replace my exhaust system...

i understand there is a muffler but what is it connected to?

cat converter?

well the muffler point opposite the open end that shoots out exhause fumes is rusted thru and fell apart aka my muffler is now not connected to anything... but then today i noticed the pipe that hooks up to the muffler has now rusted thru as well....so even if i somehow connected the muffeler back up its pointless since that needs fixin now too..

1. is my muffler still good? how do i check it?

2. is this job easily somethign i can do?

3. what am i lookin at in cost..

4. what am i doing' aka what am i replacing to my in experienced a$$ i think its the muffler and the pipin that connects that muffler?

any tips hints ideas suggestions?

could this be why it seems i kill a lot of gas?

i mean i konw its the reason why my car sounds "LOUD" as hell...

thank you, thatnk you

good day!!

bring forth all that knowledge

First, the Helms is the bomb because they didn't forget anything. Hayne's and Chilton's are notorious for leaving out critical info like the existance of bolts, or torque specs, and various electrical systems. Try wiring in an alternator with one of those manuals, then call a cab.

Second, muffler is easy to assess. Get underneath. See all the stuff that is rusted through? Replace it. If it's a small hole, you can buy a patch kit at an autoparts store, and save some bucks. If the pipe broke from rust, you're replacing something.

Check the pipe to see where the connections and welds are. If the rusted through pipe is before the entry pipe for the muffler, you need to replace the pipe - expensive because of the specific length, size, and resonnator. If the pipe rusted after the connection, muffler, cheaper and more adaptable.

Of course, this is all based on a variety of conditions that I, nor anyone else, couldn't 100% diagnose without seeing it. It's a pretty common sense thing (short of the nominclature), whatever pipes are rusted out, replace. Depending on shop labor charges, somewhere in the neighborhood of $200-$250 to replace the rear pipe and muffler.

I would very highly recomend (regardless of state) that you avoid places like Midas. They are notorious f**kers who will tell you to replace the whole system for an obscene amount of money because of a small hole in a "critical area" and their labor wages are usually the highest. Find some mom and pop shop like Bubba's Mufflers er something where good ol Bufford will probably just cut out the rotted pipe and weld in a new piece for a fiver.

1. jack the back part of your car up.
2. you see in the first pix where the muffler connects to the b pipe. remove the 2 bolts there. on the muffler itself, there are hangers. remove those. install the new or used muffler. installation is of reversal of removal.

if that is just too difficult for you, take it to your local muffler shop and oay them to put or weld a new one on.

problem solved.

if you're ever in doubt as to where you can lift the car, you can feel along the bottom of the car and find the pinch welds along the bottom....you can lift on those. The pinch weld along the bottom is going to feel like a seem in the metal on the car. The lift points on Civics are reinforced sections of the pinch welds. Just be sure you're lifting on the metal and not the lip on the bottom of the side skirts.....
