BMW vs Mercedes vs Lexus

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to decide whether to buy a BMW 325i, a Mercedes C240, or a Lexus IS300 (all used, between 2001-2004). The problem is I've never owned a luxury car before and I don't know too much about them. I'll most likely keep this car for a good number of years - I've had my Toyota for almost 10 years now and I plan to do the same with my next car.

Out of these 3 models, which do you think is the best in terms of reliability/durability (least amount of maintenance, problems, etc), performance, features, speed/power, handling, etc? In other words, which of these cars is most worth the $ I'm going to spend on it?

I should add again that my luxury car knowledge is limited. A few things that I've heard/read (not sure if these are actually true or not):

BMWs tend to have major engine/mechanical/electrical problems, especially later on down the road. BMW parts and maintenance in general = very expensive. True or false? However, in terms of handling, I've heard that BMWs are the best and most enjoyable to drive (more so than Mercedes or Lexus??)

I initially had my heart set on a Mercedes but after checking out the Consumer Reports online, where all Mercedes models are on the "Bad Bets" list, I'm now on the fence. For those of you who've had experience with these kinds of cars, have you encountered major problems with them? On the flip side, I do like the way the C240 looks and I've always thought of Mercedes as being the ultimate "luxury car."

Almost all of the Lexus models are on the Consumer Reports "Good Bets" list and I've heard that these are pretty reliable, long-lasting cars. However, as far as looks go (I know, I know - looks shouldn't be as important as other qualities but I just can't help it ), I do prefer the BMW or the Mercedes over the Lexus model.

Anyway, that's just what I've heard and it may/may not be true. That's why I was hoping to get further input and advice from all the experienced people on here. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much

Re: BMW vs Mercedes vs Lexus

Well my friend welcome to the boards first off. My Rents actually have an 04 C240. The thing is SOO SLOW. But on the other hand it definetly drives the best as far as handleing smooth shifting and Ride comfort. Ive been in the Is300 an the 325I as well. Both are faster if your looknig for kick. The Is has a significant difference in the comfort of driving Issue. The rides a tid bit bumpier. The 325i is excellent fast definetly number two on the list. Over all its a great car fun to drive go fast an still be able to doze off (your the passenger of course ) I would Highly recommend if you are in an area where you get snow. BUY THE 4Matic (mercedes), Xi (bmw) and sadly I dont think lexus has one. The C240 would be horrendious in the snow if it was for the 4 matic. Hope you make the right decision for your needs. I Hope I could be of some help in this decision.

Later Jc

Re: BMW vs Mercedes vs Lexus

i think i'd go with the lexus. i've been in the 325 and it was a nice car without question, but it didn't leave me wanting one and the performance wasn't as high as i was expecting. the lexus makes 45 more hp than the bimmer and is known for awesome handling, not to mention the abundence of aftermarket parts for it.

Lexus IS300 in Charcoal Gray with the BMW coming in a close second. the lexus just has a lot of character and sharp looks...the performance isnt bad for the type of car, either.

Definately the Lexus, IS300's look awsome, they do seem bit bland, but I've seen some really nice ones done up (no not pimped out, done up), not mention the best reliablilty of the bunch.

Oh and it's just fun to say "Lexus".

Re: BMW vs Mercedes vs Lexus

Lexus and BMW both tie for first, mercedes definitely comes in last.

Yea if you plan on your next car choice to last as long as your previous car with the least amount of upkeep, the Lexus would definately be your safest choice. I personally like the look of the IS300 and I'm quite confident that you would grow into liking the style as well. Anyways, good luck on your decision!

Go with the IS300, I think it's one of the best looking cars on the road.

Re: BMW vs Mercedes vs Lexus

BMW's do not have many major reliability dramas at all, occasionally a convenience item may screw up, but they are very mechanically robust and very easy to work on. Parts are a problem if you don't know where to look, due to the prices being high for new parts. I like to think of BMW as the German Honda; if you look after it properly then 300,000 Km's should come effortlessly.

The IS300 is a safe bet indeed, but I find the styling to be bland and the handling to be interfered with by non-switchable driver aids.

Re: BMW vs Mercedes vs Lexus

u had been lucky with toyota, soo why not keep using? (lexus is a part of toyota)

PS. IS300= Altezza in Japan

i will recommend u to take the IS300

But i personally with take the C240 if is the minor change version, i love the look of this one. E46 in close second in terms of look, if is pre-minor change the E46 first. IS300 look a bit normal with out bodykit but then again i am assuming u probably won't do that since this car are here for to last

Lexus. I believe that you will be able to get AWD with the new one if you are patient.

I like the Lexus, but its less luxurious than the other choices. It depends what youre really looking for. I would choose the Lexus from a performance standpoint, and it will be very reliable. The Mercedes is a beautiful car, but I find that its a bit too much for me; I prefer a smaller car. The BMW is pretty nice and a good choice for modification if you ever decide to do that. Probably a toss up between the Lexus and BMW, test drive them and see which you like better.

Re: BMW vs Mercedes vs Lexus

Just checked the Lexus website and the 2006 will have just over 300 hp in the 3.5L. Should give the new 3 series a run for its money.
