2005 Grand Cherokee Stalling

My fiance has a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee that keeps stalling when she is in reverse. It seems to only occur on especially hot days. We took it to a mechanic and he couldn't diagnose a problem and the Jeep dealership couldn't find the cause either. They fixed one part but the car still stalls. Has anyone had similar problems with their Jeeps and does anyone have any idea what could be causing this problem? Thanks in advance.

Re: 2005 Grand Cherokee Stalling

The 05 should still be under warrenty????????

Does it start up again right away???

Will it stall the second time if you put it in reverse again??

Intermititent problems are tougher and ones that are related to a specific operating condition like hot days are more so.....

Re: 2005 Grand Cherokee Stalling

It sounds like a computer problem, I would like to say it's the TCM but I dont know if the 05 has one, but anyhow like the man said above should this thing still be coverd??

I would take it back every day till it's fixed! My father had a problem with a Voyager MV, it was so bad that he took it back over 12 times to different dealers untill he did the lemon law, but he was like 1,000 over in miles to do it.

Good luck

It has to be under warranty, and Jeep will have to get you a rental car while the vehicle is being repaired. I would call the dealership that looked at the vehicle for the problem, and set an appt. Make sure you tell them that you expect a rental car at their expense. Jeep/Chrysler has contracts with major rental car companies for discounted warranty rentals that they pay for. I promis they will hurry to diagnose the problem with your car if they're paying $35-$45 a day for a rental car.

stalling problems

We had it looked at by several people and no one could tell what the problem is. It stalls only in reverse and then it starts up again with no problem. Then it stalls again while in reverse. Usually happens two to three times an incident. It usually happens when she just takes her foot off the brake and sometimes it doesn't stall if she quickly hits the brake when she feels the car shake like it wants to stall. The major problem is the warranty is up soon because she put over 35,000 miles on it in just a year. Her warranty is good until 36,000. That's why i am trying to find out what it could be or maybe someone had a similar problem that may shed some light on the problem.

I appreciate the responses and look forward to more suggestions.

Re: 2005 Grand Cherokee Stalling

Keep taking it back to the dealer. If you can document that the problem existed before the warrenty expired, they cannot drop you. They must fix the problem.

I believe you have a few more hot days for them to work on the vehicle. Be FIRM with them that you want the problem fixed!!! Be prepared to leave it with them untill it is fixed. This could be a safety issue when backing out into traffic or other situations. Make sure that they understand that you view it as such. Tell them that if they can't figure it out to get help from the factory tech support. Be prepared to get "nasty" as this is their problem - not yours- even tho it is an inconvenience and frustrating to you.

Now as to causes.... It could be one of the control modules that maintain engine speed when the vehicle is put into gear or a sensor that detects a drop in engine speed. The throttle position sensor might be one place to look. What is strange is the fact that it happens mostly when placed in reverse at an idle and not in any of the forward gears. That it happens when it is hot out is a complication in the matter but they should be prepared to suck it up and get er done!!

Keep us posted on how you are doing with the situation.

We're with ya on this.

Maybe someone else could jump in and offer some pointed suggestions too.

Re: 2005 Grand Cherokee Stalling

You have to go to the dealer. Make sure you start a problem claim with the Jeep, so that if and when the miles go over on the Jeep that you can bitch about the problem with proof that it started before the end.

Also look into the Lemon Law before the miles on the car get to high.

Good night man get this fixed with them before it's too late!

Good luck bud...

Re: 2005 Grand Cherokee Stalling

I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited edition. I have the same type of stalling problem. Usually happens when the car is cold. I drive down my street, come to a stop sign and the rpm's drop really low and then the engine just turns off. I start it up and it runs fine. I have taken back to the dealer now for the 5th time. They have changed so many parts but it still has the same problem. My dealer is now driving my car around with an electronic device called "autopilot". When the jeep stalls the dealer simply presses this button on the autopilot that is hooked up to my car and the autopilot will record everything that happens 20 secs before and 20 secs after. This information is then downloaded to the dealer computer and sent to Chrysler. Now I just need my jeep to stall while the mechanic is driving it around. I'll keep you posted!

Re: 2005 Grand Cherokee Stalling

The dealership sent us a letter regarding our 05' GC. It basically stated that there was a seal or somthing wrong in the tranny that could lead to transmission problems. Perhaps this might be the cause? Because it said not all GC's had this problem. So mabey yours was one of them. Because I know mine has not had the stalling problem. But mine does seem to take longer than it should going from reverse-drive. I dont know...
