Exclamation Help!!! Shifts Hard Light Comes On!

A little history: I have a 95 Aurora with 90,000 miles. It has a new transmission and I have owned it for about 2 months. 3 weeks after I got it, (transmission was installed right before I got it), it started shifting hard and the check engine light came on. I have a code reader, so I hooked it up and got "84 - IC Too Few 24x Reference Pulses"

The light does not come on all the time as with most people with the hard shift problem. If I clear the code it normally goes for 2 - 3 days for the light to come back on. When the light is off the car runs great. I have never seen anyone in the forums that has had this code. I thought it was the speed sensor that everyone talks about but it is not throwing that code....

From what I can tell, 24x is a Crank sensor. Could that be causing this problem? Logic tells me that if the tranny is going to high pressure when the light comes on that it is a tranny problem.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Re: Help!!! Shifts Hard Light Comes On!

If you bought the car at a dealer then have them fix it under warranty?

Other than that - this may help:

Re: Help!!! Shifts Hard Light Comes On!

Thanks for that sheet! Lots of info on there. The code I'm looking for wasn't on there though. It says to check the Engine performance sheets. Do you happen to have that you could share w/ me? Thanks a lot!!!

Re: Help!!! Shifts Hard Light Comes On!

sorry, that's the only link i have.

everything get signals from everything else so i guess it's possible that the crannk sensor might be the issue.

i have not had tranny issues so far so i don't have the experience you may need.

click the link under my signature and start a thread in the "classic maintinence" section. there are a lot of people who have had tranny issues on hi-mileage classics who may be able to give you better info.

Re: Help!!! Shifts Hard Light Comes On!

Just an update... I have installed the new Shift Solenoid kit and it already had the update. Installed the new solenoids andyway and it did not fix the problem. I then searched some more and decided to try replacing the PCM/ECM/TCM or computer. Bought a used one on eBay and now the car runs great. Seems like code 84 is not a valid code and means that the computer is toast. It had been running for a week without issue.

This works for mine

I have the same problem with my 96'. Try disconnecting your battery for like 3 minutes any time the light comes on. I'm pretty sure the code is on for the torque converter clutch. Your gas mileage when light is on should be horrendous. This is only a temp fix, but it works fine for me. Once you reconnect your battery your car learns to shift properly and should stay good for a few weeks/days depending on luck.
