87 cutlass ciera 3. v6 cuts out when warm

Car runs fine until it warms up. After 5 - 10 minutes it starts missing. When I stop and turn it off, for a few minutes, it starts up fine, but will die easily and runs very rough. If I leave it off for an hour it will run fine for 5 minutes and the process repeats. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks randymc

There are several items that are could be causing your problem. The first is the ignition module located under the coils. Once it heats up it sounds like it is opening a circuit and shutting down the ignition system. The second item is the Crank Position sensor. This can do exactly the same thing when it gets warm. I would change the ignition module first and then go to the CPS.

You didn't say when the last time was you changed plugs and wires. Wires can do strange things so before you change the ignition module you may want to put on new wires if you haven't changed them recently. A bad wire can cause the coils to go bad and then short out the ignition module.

I may have inadvertently mislead you. It only dies when I stop at an intersection, slow down to turn a corner or when slowing in traffic. I starts back up immediately, but remains running rough. I do not have to let it cool down to start it. I haven't changed anything. I had a shop look at it and the mechanic told me he thought it might be a relay or the computer module. That didn't make sense to me so I thought I could get a better opinion here. I have been in electrnics along time, but not automotive. Thanks randymc

Both of the items I mentioned can still be causing your problem. Every mechanic I know today always blames the most expensive item and start replacing until they find out what the problem is. Start with wires and plugs and then move to the ignition module and finally the CPS.

I do have one question. Does this happen after your torque convertor has been locked by the solenoid? If that is the case unplug the connector on top of your transmission, if the TCC Solenoid is the problem the issue should go away. If not see the information listed above. Good Luck!!!

if the vehicle has over 100,000 I would definitely consider changing the coil packs too (especially if you are doing the work). Bad coil packs can cause the type problem you refer to, along many others. I had one going bad for years and the dealer kept "fixing" other problems. When they finally replaced the bad coil pack, problems solved, then another one went out a month later. Now at about 130,000 I am pretty sure the remaining one is beginning to go.

Here is what I have found. 3 bad plug wires, 1 bad plug, and numerous vacume leaks. I have one other problem. I seem to have an intermitant ground to my AC compresser. It tries to kick in, but doesn't til I ground the ground lead. Thanks for all the help. It truely is appeciated. This is a great forum. Randymc

Ok i have a 1995 cutlass ciera i have a problem which i can not figure out i had it diagnosed but no codes showed up. Usually when it is hotter outside i can drive until then engine warms up and then it dies shutting everything down on the car cept for the charge light and oil light. Then i can let it sit for a few mins and start it back up, driving another couple blocks until it shuts down again, repeating itself. It seems as if it is starving for something that it lack. I have thought about the cars computer but not real sure. Keep in mind i can drive it fine when cooler outside. Thanks for the help if u grant any. It sucks i just started driving and this happened and everyone i asked is stumpt

Thanks derick
