700R4 or not ?

Okay, i pulled a thm350 and a 305 out of a 84 monte carlo, then i pulled the v6 2.8L and the transmission out of my 88 camaro. I called rose chevrolet (a local chevrolet dealership) and i was told that in my 88', they used a 700r4 for every motor and that my v6 definately had a 700r4 in it because of a number on the service suply code of the car that read "MD8" or something like that. Okay, so I was pretty happy, then I pulled the transmission off of my 2.8L and i measured the bolt holes and there is no way in hell that transmission will bolt up to the housing of my 305. ill kind of show yall that the bell housing looks like. this is what the bell housing looks like on the 88 camaro trans. o o

o o

o o

and heres what the housing looks like on my 305 motor....

o
o o

o o

.......so its obvious i cant bolt up the two together when you compare the bolt patterns above ^^^ and the housing pattern off of my 305, which is what all chevy v8 housings look like. so Im guessin i dont have a 700r4 and now i have no idea what transmission i have. If somebody could help me, please id appreciate it. Thanks a lot to anybody that can help.

oh ps, the housing on the 88 transmission looks like a triangle thats cut off half way up strait across.

but the housin on a chevy v8 looks like a triangle that comes to a point on the top and it kind of rounded. I just need to nkow what type of tranny i have in my 2.8L.

Re: 700R4 or not ?

you have a 700R4, but a different outter case and bellhousing than the V8 model transmissions. basically youve got a different transmission on the outside, but the guts are the same.

your problem is that the V6 engines are 60 degree V's and the small block chevy is a 90 degree V, meaning it has a wider bellhousing. and why they dont match up. so technically the dealership was right, did you tell them you planned on using the transmission on a V8??

I dont think i did. but how hard is it to rip out the guts of the 700r4 of the 88 camaro trans and put it in a casing that will fit a chevy v8 ? and since i already have a turbo 350, is it possible to just put everything thats in the 700r4 in the casing for the turbo 350 ? and one other question, If i go with a thm 350, i gotta buy a torque arm adapter so the torque arm will bolt up correctly. Now you saaid that the 700r4 has a couple different outter casings, one with a 60 and one with a 90 degree v. Now, if theyre the same inside, can i just buy a 700r4 casing and use it, so that i dont need a torque arm adapter on the end where the drive shaft meets the transmission ? ya get what im saying ? im asking on the end of the trans where the drive shaft meets it, is it the same shape on that side for both outter casings ?

Re: 700R4 or not ?

ok, the answer is in my post. if you find an empty V8 casing for a 700R4, you can swap the guts, but if it was me i would just get a 700R4 out of a doner car and have it rebuilt by a transmission specialist. if you dont know automatic transmissions, dont try it yourself. and no you cant put the 700R4 guts into a TH750 case, they are completely different, its like trying to put V8 parts in a V6, just wont work. Only thing i can say is try to turn the sixer 700R4 in as a core on a V8 unit, and sell the TH350 to help fund the project.

Hey thats a great idea. I think ill just use my old 700r4 tranny and possible my 350 turbo to fund the project. dam i never thought about that. Ill probably just rebuild it myself. Im confident i can do it but whop knows if ill actually do it or not. thanks for all the help. I appreciate it. Id be up sh*t vreak without a paddle if it werent for all the help i got on here.

smartass, i was kinda talking about engine internals, like the crankshaft and camshaft and such, ya know, im willing to bet that you even have a few generic bolts that will transferr from one engine to another..... geeze the things i put up with

oh and um, you arent saying that your intake manifold will fit a V8 are you?????

Re: 700R4 or not ?

dunno, its just a four bolt rectangle. simple measurements would tell ya.

and again, i was talking about internal parts, that dont match up, he was talking about putting internals from the 700R4 into the TH350, so i compaired it to putting V8 internals into a V6.

if your asking if they have the same torqu arm set up in the rear end, then the answer is no. you have to buy a torque arm adapter from jegs or summit to put any 350 trans into a camaro if your coming from a 200 or 700r4. since im puttin in a turbo 350, im gonna need one. now the fun part is getting the transmission mounts in right since im totally switchin trannys.

the tranny mount doesn't change when you swap the V6 700r4 for the V8. same location, same crossmember, same tranny mount, same driveshaft. Why are you going with a th350? There is no benefit to it (unless you are building this car the drag track). Gearing is better in 700r4 and gas mileage will be better. No need to change driveshaft, buy adapters, or anything. And you can find them cheap. I got mine for $75 and built it to withstand 450+ horses with less than $400.
