94 gc shifts weird
hello all,
well i just had the engine (5.2, went without warning at 90000, #4 bearing failure) replaced in my 94 jgc, and now it has developed a weird shifting pattern.. i have tried to research all of the posts on tranny issues, but havent really found one that is similar. first off, when i take off, whether i floor it from a dead stop or not, itll shift out of first gear at 2300 and it never downshifts to first no matter how slow im goin, itll just lug along in second. third and overdrive still work fine and if im on the highway, itll shift down to pass, but it just seems like first is affected. i dont get a od light like alot of other people have posted. sometimes when i take off normally, itll go thru first to second, then it seems to jump between first and second for a couple seconds and then goes back to second. i have ck'd the fluid like 10 times now at operating temp in N, but its def full. it really bothers me because before it went to the shop the trans shifted perfectly. i have only had my jeep since feb, bought it for 5500 and have already had to put 2700 into it. between the v/c and this engine, it has really strapped me for cash. its really killin the gas mileage bein stuck in second like this, cuz if im in stop and go traffic i have to really get into the pedal to get it to go. im about ready to cut my losses and get rid of this damn omen. i never had a jeep before, and now im wonderin what the hell i was thinkin buyin one. i know one thing, its really changed my opinion on these vehicles and i can pretty much guarantee that i wont ever get another jeep/chrysler/mopar vehicle again. any info on this one would really help me out. |

Re: 94 gc shifts weird
Welcome to AF derkyb
First off - how long since you've had it back on the road after the engine repairs?? The battery was likely disconnected while the engine was out and that erases the shift control program so it has to relearn your driving habits. If that isn't the cause, then you need to look for any codes from the PCM as it could be a speed sensor or one of the shift solonoids in the trany. Come to think of it - there is a downshift cable that needs correct adjustment......... That could be it... Ask the shop that did the engine if they adjusted the kickdown cable or if they would have a look at it for you. They would have had it disconnected when the engine was removed..... Then go on to the codes, speed sensor and solonoids etc. JD |

Re: Re: 94 gc shifts weird
ive only had it back for less than a week, and i could tell within the first 20 minutes, things werent right. would i be getting any fault codes considering i dont have any ck eng light?? i thought about the kickdown too, but that wouldnt explain why it shifting out of first at such a low rpm. it also will kick down out of overdrive, to pass on the interstate, so i ruled it out. its a long shot, but i was thinking maybe a tranny control module, but i dont have all the symptoms they usually give when they fail. i really dont want to even take it back to the morons at the shop, it took them 6 friggin weeks to swap an engine and put fresh stickers on it. plus they screwed me over on a few other things, like now the ck engine oil light stays on even tho the level is full, i had to rebleed the brakes, svc the power steering fluid, engine coolant was low, and a couple other things u would never think would be wrong coming out of a shop. so i figured i'd just trouble shoot, diagnose, and do the repairs myself, i really cant go without it any longer, my motorcycle crapped out on me and i wouldnt have a ride to werk. so......hey i got another unrelated question. i looked up on jeeps website about recalls and i have 3 that were never complied with. one is something about the brake rotors. since it was from 98, they didnt have the info available on the net. i just changed the back ones, so does that screw me out of any recall and do i have to eat the money i spent replacing them?? i emailed jeep, just waiting for a response.
