2000 Neon with Gas Mileage inmind

I’ve read through some of the post and I’m sure I’ll get so smart ass remarks but they keep me laughing.

I have a 2000 Plymouth Neon SOHC auto trans. I bought it looking for a good gas mile car. I get between 29 to 33 MPG. Now I’m a bit excited about all the mods out there. I’m trying to mod for better gas mileage and if I get more power in the process that’s ok also.

I know I know WHAT? You can’t get more power and gas mileage both! I’ve put a K&N drop in filter and Platinum plugs and have notice more pickup and gas mileage went up by 1 sometime 2 mpg. I know that the K&N cold air would have been better but I live down a road that floods from time to time and didn’t want to take the risk. Moneys not a problem at this point but Money to performance ratio is. I’m open for suggestions or ideas.

Thanks

Wade

I know it sounds good in theory, this part will save me gas, but the cost of the part often offsets it. That said, the best mileage comes from skinnier tires and/or weight reduction.

Also, I am not sure on the 2000 and up neons, but first generation neons don't like the platinum plugs. I doubt the second generations benefit any from the added spark. The peppiness you described isn't neccessarily from the platinum, but the fact that is a new plug.

Have you mod your 1999 neon? and what have you done to it? What was the one thing you've done that was the biggest value to you? Anything Performance parts or Cosmetics.

Yes I have. So far it has a CAI, UDP, cat-back exhaust for performance. Appearance wise, it has Diamond clear headlights, Altezza taillights, glo-gauge overlay, and under the hood for appearance it had the MSD coil pack and Magnecor spark plug wires.

Hey,

Tell me more about the UDP? Does that stand for underdrive pulley?

I'm guessing by sounds of it the pulley is smaller and the belts rotate slower. Which is interesting because I can see that saving on gas and increasing performance. Did you have any problems with the alternator, power steering, A/C, etc.?

Thanks
Wade

You would be guessing correct. It is smaller and lighter and allows the engine to free up some HP. Here is a pic of one installed

I haven't had any problems. They are all gonna be about the same quality, but I would stay away from eBay ones. The picture you see is on from Modern Performance. They are based in Houson, close to me, and are great to do business with. Here is a link to their website. They also have good pricing.

Nope, no vibrations at all. Only smooth acceleration.
