more about bad fuel pumps

I wonder if anybody has added in an external pump without removing the old one in the tank?
I've heard of someone who did it to a motorhome and used it for a year or two then sold it with the new pump still hanging by a coathanger.
I would like to know what pump etc. for if it fails on a road trip.
