92 regal 3.1 dies after 20 min

Can someone tell me what might be wrong with my Regal - it will run great for around 20 minutes till it's good and hot, then starts jerking a little and dies. The engine will not restart for about 5 min then it runs again for a little while. No check engine light, no codes are set, it has a new fuel pump, ecm and alternator. The old alternator had a shorted regulator so I'm thinking something may have been damaged by too much voltage but I have no idea where to look.

Joe,
It's heat related, so its electrical.
You said you worked on the fuel pump. Did you replace the relay?
Is the service Engine soon light on?
If so run your codes. Do you know how to do that?
Does your vehicle run hot?
Is it the original motor/exhaust?
Fill me in, I'll square you away.

Re: 92 regal 3.1 dies after 20 min

Thanks for the reply - yes, the fuel pump has been replaced. After the car dies, I can hear the fuel pump run for a couple seconds when I turn the ignition off and then back to run, so I didn't bother checking the relay as it seems to be doing its job. I checked for codes and all I get is 12. As far as I know, the engine is original. I'm not sure about the exhaust, but it looks to be in good condition. If you have any ideas, I'd sure like to hear them. Thanks.

Joe,
This is a worst case senario.
Fortunately, you have already replaced the ECM.
The second item I would inspect is, the crankshaft sensor. On the 2.8L, its on the back of the motor, underneath, approximately in the middle of the motor. You have to force your hand up in there to reach it. It has one 8MM bolt that secures it. After the bolt is removed, the sensor slides out. Purchase a new sensor so you can know what it looks like before you get started. I've had them fail and not set a code. They should be about $16.

Thumbs up Re: Re: 92 regal 3.1 dies after 20 min

Well I finally got the crank sensor in about a month ago and the car is running great - I just wanted to thank you for the advice.
