Multiple O2 Sensors?
'95 Escort Lx 1.9L
Ok, I think I isolated my latest problem to my O2 sensor (see my other post) but now I am wondering if there are in fact 2 O2 sensors on my escort. Can anyone confirm this? |

Yes, there are two O2 sensors on a 95. There should be one before the cat like on the older Escorts and one after the cat like the newer ones with OBDII.

That must mean that one of mine is defeated then. I looked under the car today, and I found the front O2 sensor just before the cat, but after the cat there is nothing. I looked all around the exhaust too, nothing.

Re: Multiple O2 Sensors?
Ok, looks like mine never had the 2nd O2 sensor. 1996 is when they started the OBDII (which mine doesnt have), and added the 2nd sensor. Mine is 1995 so I never had more than 1.

FWIW, mine is a 96 with OBDII and only one O2 sensor. I've been under the car looking and don't see a second.
BTW, anybody got a trick to getting the sensor out of the manifold? I can get the sensor socket and rachet handle on the sensor. But have no place for leverage. Has anybody come up a way to get in there and pull? Bill |

Re: Multiple O2 Sensors?
If yours is like mine, there is "barely" enough room to get a 7/8" wrench on the old sensor. There is only enough room between the radiator and the engine for like 2" of swing on the wrench. I had to cut the wires off the old sensor, and using a combination of the box end, and both ways of the open end, I could loosen the sensor enough so that I could remove it by hand. It was a real pain. To get the new one in, thread it by hand, and then once it starts getting tight, do the same, alternating box end, with both sides of the open end.
There is an easier way, with an actual O2 sensor socket, but this is how I did mine. |

I guess I'll try the box end 7/8" wrench. I've got a 6 point. I also have the sensor socket, but it's so big you can't get any leverage.
Thanks Bill |

One good tug with my 7/8 six point and it was loose. It had the grayish tint that plugs sometimes have. Cleaned it up good and reinstalled. The wife says it runs better.
