speedometer issue

Got a question about my new baby...a 99 gst. The car is wonderful but sometimes I don't know how fast I am going. Occasionally, the speedometer doesn't work, but the odometer keeps moving at the correct speed. My question is "why?" It appears to me that the speed sensor on the tranny still works since the mileage still increases. Also, the speedometer only has this issue after it is started...it doesn't stop working while driving. I'm just a little confused about this and I was wondering if anyone knew of the easy solution. If not, I will be pulling the dash apart to check all connections.

Re: speedometer issue

Maybe the cluster was pulled before, and the paper stuff behind the actually needle picks up. Had this problem the first time I pulled my cluster. The needle would go up, and then get caught on the lifted paper. Depending on where it's lifted up, it can get caught at all different locations. My 2 cents.

PS - Make you sig pics alittle smaller. And where did u get that front bumper? I want one. Does it sit lower than the rest with out a kit?

This may sound really retarded but when I put my Reverse Glow gauges in I realized about 6 months later that my Tach only went to about 500 RPMs and stop and not return. Eventually I got annoyed and tore my dash apart and found that believe it or not there was a cob web inside the tach spring/motor thingy and it wouldn't let it go anywhere.I fixed it by blowing it out with the ol' lungs and just turning the piss out of the mechanisms back and forth until it would return to 0 when I moved it up to like 5000 then it was fixed. So I guess what I am trying to say is maybe you've got some webs. Good luck and happy hunting.

last time i had problems with my speedometer also, but in the end i found out the speed sensors just need to be reconnected.... so try that... pull the speed sensors out the tranny and wipe it clean and just put it back in and drive around the block see if that works for u...

Re: speedometer issue

If your tranny is like mine, you have 2 sets of speed sensors-Input Speed Sensors (ISS) and Output Speed Sensors (OSS). Try cleaning these, if that doesn't work....do you have aftermarket gauges installed? Maybe they weren't installed correctly. Good Luck.

Re: speedometer issue

He said the speed was still working. Best bet is to pull the cluster, flatten everything, make sure there's nothing caught up in the back, and try it out.
