Just Bought my first bike, Thoughts?

I just bought an 82' Honda Magna 750 in great shape. 14,000 miles, new tires, no dents, very minor scratches (normal wear type), no leaks anywhere, recent carb tuning, new seat. Overall you'd swear this bike was only about 5-6 years old.

What I want to know is if anyone has any experience with a bike like this. Anything to watch for (maintenance issues), the good and bad points with this model. If anyone has any comments or opinions about this model I wouldn't mind hearing them. Being my 1st bike, even though I've done some research I'm still learning a LOT.

What type of general maintenance should I do to it besides change the oil on a regular basis? What air pressure should I set my forks at? Any aftermarket replacement items that would help or are recommended? Just want to know as much info about my bike as I can. Thanks,

WELCOME TO RIDING!!! Congrats on the bike! Sounds like she's a beaut!

First thing I think of beyond what you've mentioned for maint. is cleaning and lubing the chain. Other than that, make sure that brake fluid is at the right point in the reservoir, and um... tire pressures (of course)... Good luck!

i'd actually get a major service done and have the piece of mind that its in the best condition possible. i have always done this with any vehicle just for my own piece of mind.

you may find the brake fluid well past its used by date too

Another question

Thanks for the input guys, as for the chain well it's shaft drive so that I won't have to worry about. Taking her in for a complete fluid change isn't a bad idea though. I'll probably take it in sometime in the next few weeks to have it gone through. I just paid for the bike, need to get a little cash back in the bank before I send it in for maintenance.

I've been riding it for a few days now and it's got a sputter/miss in it until it gets to about 5,000 rpm unless your not accelerating very hard. It will cruise nice and smooth and will go like hell if you get the engine up above 5 grand, but under medium throttle it will miss a little. I called a Honda dealer and they said I need the carbs pulled off and re-jetted and cleaned. Does this sound like a valid solution? Should I try some carb cleaner in the gas? How about any other suggestions on this issue? All replies are appreciated. Thanks,

^What Blayne said.

Don't be afraid to rev it out a lil when you are running the carb cleaner through... don't push it TOO hard (I doubt it revs to 20,000rpms) but be willing to blow some of that "gunk" out.

As soon as I get my digital camera back from a friend I'll post a picture. The tank and covers are a deep bluish purple. It is the v45 and it's got 14,249 miles on it. She'g got a couple chips or scuffs here or there but no road rash. I'm trying to be careful and not put the first big beauty mark on her. What did you mean by the weight of the driveshaft exactly? I know it rides/corners better after I adjusted the fork and tire pressure. As for the carb cleaner, I'm going to go ahead and try that. It can't do much more than not work. It's kinda difficult to really run her very hard. I'm pretty new on a bike and in third gear it gets to 85 in a heartbeat. Not really wanting to push myself past that point quite yet. Obviously to say, there were no corners involved in the 85 mph. Does anyone have a recommendation for fuel grade. The manual just says over 86 octane. Will 10% ethanol blend hurt an older bike, Should I run a little premium? More thoughts?

I say just run stock gas thats all i've ever run not sure about blend though.

mine is the purple too!! well purple purple but still cool.

what I meant by weight if you ever do really fly around turns remember you got a little extra weight on one side its cause a little skidderyness so its best not to go to wild in turns this only happened when my speedo was pegged so its highspeed issue only.

I love my bike so much, that the most important thing I have found is to use a good quality synthetic oil. A friend of mine is an Amsoil dealer, and I have been using their oil in everthing. They just came out with new motorcycle oils, that make the competition look pitiful...follow links on my friend's website to learn more. www.lubedealer.com/jtubbs. They blow the competition away, especially with respect to rust protection...important for when we sadly put the bike away for the winter!!!

you gotta be kidding, look closer. I got pics of them. but sorry, I can't guarantee if you'll find a slut next to a SV, like the RR (which is NOT A 954 ).
