Re: Balance shaft...Purpose?
Basically it decreases engine vibration, for the purpose of a more comfortable ride. If you are in to performance removing these will allow the motor to rev a little bit quicker since the crank doesn't have to turn the shafts.
Removing them also has the added protection of the balance shaft belt breaking and wrapping itself up in the timing belt. If removed you might notice a more pronounced vibration at certain RPM's, some have reported no change. For a more detailed explanation, check this out http://www.vfaq.com/mods/balance-shafts.html

Re: Balance shaft...Purpose?
I just want to add that this mod does not add HP. IT may free up a few hp, but nothing that you will notice. Its more for more oil pressure at idle and eliminating the liability mentioned above with the belt letting go. The shaft also spins at twice the motors RPM, so it can be going as fast as 15000 rpm with a stock rev limiter. Its not uncommon for the bearing to sieze and spin ruining your day..
