To manually put the top down you must relieve the fluid pressure. Some of these cars have a manual bypass valve that when opened will allow the fluid to flow. The bypass valve is usually located on the drivers side of the motor between the two lines. If you don't have a manual bypass valve then you will have to drain the system. A really messy job. Get a full roll of paper towels and a container that can be squeezed in to catch the fluid. Unbolt the line at the motor reservoir and allow it to drain. When you put the top down a great deal of additional fluid will come out. The top is quite heavy and you will need to raise it from the center. If you get off center it will bind up. The probable cause of your motor malfunction is probably bad brushes. I rebuilt mine but had to cut my own brushes since I couldn't find a set anywhere. If you decide to do this, take your old brushes to a starter or generator shop they'll usually help you find a close fit that can be modified. I have a motor that I bought and did not use since I was able to rework the original. If you are interested in it, it is for sale.
