smoking and ticking

i have an 88. and it smokes white and i can't get rid of this ticking noise. i just did a cam on it. but it ticked before i did the cam. could it be the valves. i have a free flow exaust.

White Smoke = burning coolant

You have a head gasket shot or a cracked warped head. Its pretty normal on most mazda's the ticking could be a sticking valve (also normal ) or if its a lower end tick your bearings might be wearing out due to the coolant mixing with your oil. Check the color of the oil to be more sure how much water your getting.
