yeah, i had to cut my stock box off the mas, but K&N filters wont alter your emissions.

Re: 1 quick ques need advice about intake

no intake will alter your emissions permanently. if you put the stock air box back on for your smog check, then the car will run the same as it had before with the stock filter.

the problem most people have is when they're removing the 4 metal screws from the plastic air box, the metal screws tend to strip the plastic. with the metal screws/bolts spinning freely b/c the plastic is stripped, it is then hard to get the screws out. ya, i just had to cut my air box off as well.

to prevent stripping, you'll want to be extra careful. ( i was just excited to put my K&N filter in that i didn't care how i got the stock air box off---as long as it came off). you'll want to grab the other side of the screw (i think there's a nut of some sort there) and hold the nut in place with some pliers while you unscrew the bolt from the other side. its this nut that can tear the plastic, so just hold the nut in place while you unbolt each and you should be good. a pair of vise grip pliers would be nice.

Re: 1 quick ques need advice about intake

one bolt isn't a big deal. if you can get the other 3 off in good shape, then 3 bolts holding the air box on would be ok. Hey! remember, you just need the air box on for that ONE day you get the smog check done. 3 out of 4 bolts holding it on won't do your car any harm for that one day. if you ARE worried, then i'm sure you can find some other way to secure that one side where the bolt is stripped.

but if that doesn't sound like a feasible option for you, then you can always purchase someone's used air box off e-bay or 3Si for about 10 bucks. then go get your intake, and you'll have a good stock air box ready to install when the smog check rolls around.
