Fuel pump resistor-do I need a new one?

I just cut the wires going the resistor and spliced them together on my 98 Buick Regal GS S/C. Car started up fine, as it was starting and then dieing 5 sec.later prior to the fix. What I'd like to know is what if any harm will I do by leaving it as is. Does the fuel pump run in high mode w/out the resistor, or is it's purpose just to reduce fuel pump noise at low speeds? (which I read somewhere online) Thanks, Clint

The fuel pump will run in high all the time without one. Some people run their in high all the time with no ill effects to the pump or the car.
See the following link on how to change one.

Well I'm going to get one anyway, but there is enough slack on the harness for me to re-route the resistor above the battery probably along the firewall or near the grille. The resistor actually had a crack along the entire front side when I removed it, just fell apart in my hands. Strange how the GP and Regal resistors are mounted in different locations, don't see the reason why. Thanks Clint
