Tuning a dual stage turbo setup

I'm in the process of putting together a turbo setup for my '98 RS. I have a turbo XS dual stage boost controller. The lower setting is going to be at about 9 or 10psi, and the higher will be set at 20psi. Obviously I will need different amounts of fuel at these two boosts. I have 1000cc venom injectors (overkill, I know), venom fuel rail, and walboro 255 pump, and a Greddy eManage FMU. Does anybody know how to set this up so that fuel is injected properly? Anybody have experience with a dual stage turbo setup? Thanks!

Re: Tuning a dual stage turbo setup

I don't know how the e-manage works, but set that to your injectors and it should make the car run. The airflow sensor will see the boost difference and inject fuel accordingly... the 'accordingly' is adjustable through your electronics. You don't tune much before you get out and run it. Last thing... how do you know how much boost you'll be running? What if you can run 21psi, why run 20? Why 2 stages at all?

usually a dual stage boost controller is so that you dont spin a FWD as much off the line.

Re: Tuning a dual stage turbo setup

Well, the whole idea is that one setting is for pump gas (93 octane), and the other is for 110 octane... And for a better launch.
As for deciding on 20psi... it's difficult to say what kind of hp I might get with that. I just don't want to cross 400hp without a Quaiffe LSD, stronger half shafts, and some forged gears... at least. (Feel free to add to that list if I missed something, other than the clutch.)
I'll update this when I get some numbers.

Re: Tuning a dual stage turbo setup

Using the two settings for different fuels makes sense. The thing to be aware of is the different tuning styles that go with each setting. Typically one would tune the pump gas settng with conservative timing and around 11:1 AFR, while on race gas you need (and can get away with) a little more timing and an AFR of around 12:1. I highly recomend tuning with a wideband (3-400 bucks)...

Re: Tuning a dual stage turbo setup

Hope you have a built engine. For 20psi on a n/t you arae going to need it. do they even make forged gears for nt's?

Re: Tuning a dual stage turbo setup

I have Eagle rods and JE pistons (8.8:1). I may have to get some gears made... I may have to return all the empties that day!

As for the timing issue, I'm getting a pressure activated timing retard, so that the second I hit 9 or 10 psi, it retards the timing (up to 20degrees). ... And you better believe I'm tuning with a Wideband O2 sensor!

Re: Tuning a dual stage turbo setup

Oh yeah, how much do you think I should retard the timing for the higher boost? Thanks

Re: Tuning a dual stage turbo setup

Only Jake here has a turbo NT that I know of... so don't count on anyone else's guess. 2gnt and dsmtuners have some more people that have done it.

I'll race you for it! Second thought... give me a year. lol ...The only time I beat a turbo eclipse I heard a horrible grinding noise and never saw him on Gratiot Rd. again.
