93 manual tranny how much lubricant?

Hello

I'm working on a 93 Escort of which I'm completing a clutch replacement. As you may know, the place to add and check the level of the lubricant is the Speed sensor. However, I cannot get this thing out of the tranny. Because of this I cannot use the gear for a dipstick.

Anyone know how much lubricant this tranny takes? Currently, I'm filliing the tranny using the vent hole. It's a slow process (1 qt every 5 mts). I roughly checked what came out and got aprox 2.5 qts. The Haynes manual does not have a qty listed that I could findm

Please respond soon so I can get this car on the road. This has been a long process working on it when I have time.

Thank you so much for your time and reply!

Dan

My Haynes Manual says 2 and 7/8 Quarts of Mercon ATF.

(Page 1-2 in my book.)

I hate that Haynes manual. If you go to the part about changing tranny fluid it doesn't tell you how much It's in another section of the book! Go figure....

Why can't you get it out? I know its in a bad spot - maybe trying slippin ga csrewdriver in there and pry it up. I really think yer gonna be better being able to actually check it... too much or too little, oyu could do some damage....

The speed sensor is stuck in the tranny. I've tried just pulling on it to get it out. I've tried prying, I've under cut around the sensor and tried prying. (the edge has broken instead of the sensor coming out) I am going to pull the right axel (again) and see if I can get the speed sensor out by pushing up on it. Unknowing I broke my speed sensor when I unhooked the speedo cable. I need to pull the axel to get the gear out of the tranny. Hopfully I don't have to pull the tranny (again).

Thank you for your reply!

I'll keep your guys informend.

Hey just FYI, I have an extra speed sensor. I'm amidst replacing my tranny and just acquired one from a junkyard, it came w/ everything attached - so if you need that or any other peices of it let me know. The orig tranny was in pretty good shape, the input shaft selector finally wore out.
I'm not sure that going through the axle hole will give the access you need... good luck

How much do you want for the speed sensor? I'm fixing this car up for a single mom. I'm trying to keep the cost low.

Lets see, by yer zip I'll guess it'll cost maybe $3 to mail it; my new favorite beer is ~$7 per six pack, which is just what I need to get motivated to put this !@#$ thing back in place. You can have it and anything else that'll fit in the package for $10.

Given the recent economy I've gone to basing the value of things on the one thing that is constant - food!

10.00 sounds like a deal. This speed sensor is from a 5 spd? Right? It's from the tranny that you pulled out of your car that was working when you pulled it. Your 95 had a cable running the speedo? I broke the hold down bolt trying to get it out. Could you include that in the package too? (Every bolt on this car is rusted! Good thing that it was given to me.) I do wish that I had worked on getting the Speed sensor out when the tranny was sitting on the floor! Now I have to work at the ends of my finger tips either bending over a fender or underneath holding my arms up getting dirt in my eyes.

If all of the above are true, how would you like me to get the X 500 cents (10.00) to you?

Thanks

Dan

No prob, will include that bolt. Funny, I managed to lose that same one the last time I checked the fluid (it just vanish). Had the darnest time findin ga replacement b/c its unusually long for a 10mm bolt.
Yes, 5 speed, off a '93 actually. I just got a whole tranny from the junkyard, the sensor was on it bolt included. Same deal as the '95, cable runs through it w/ a little clip that slides it to hold it secure. Actually I was going to keep the one from my '95 since I knew it worked w/ the rest of the wiring on the car - but the part is exactly the same.
Use PayPal? I have an account tied to my email address, [email protected]. If you have an account then you can just tranfer $$ w/ no charge to anybody.
Send me a PM for more info if you want.

Re: Re: 93 manual tranny how much lubricant?

hey, i believe there are two types of almost identical speed sensors for the escort 5 spds. you sure youre swapping the right one, right?

to check, count the # teeth on the 'dipstick' gear

sure is weird that you cant get it out. its a damn tight fit- aluminum cylinder of s.sensor into aluminum tranny case. i suppose you tried lots of pb blaster and tapping and whatnot?

cheers,
anthony

I think I'd get a screwdriver and hammer and try dapping downward first. May have a sealant that needs broken lose.

Hey I haven't received any $$ yet - just wanted to make sure I shouldn't have?

As far as I can tell teh 2 sensors aret he same - only diff is one ('95) has a red sline, the other is an off-white ('93). Actually white seems more practical since the fluid is red - whos brilliant idea was it to make the gear teh same color as the fluid???
