New Engine? Engine Swap?

I have an automatic 91 LX accord that I recently bought from a friend of mine, it replaced my very annoying vw as my commuter car. I immediately fell in love with it, it's a very comfortable drive, and I know I'm going to probably want to keep this car for a while. Hell it's the only '91 I know that can still get 25mpg, esp after 14 years!

But with 180k on it, original engine, I know it's time is coming sooner or later.

I was talking with that friend about it, and I'm almost decided on putting in a rebuilt engine and tanny to 'revive' the car.

This friend of mine, though, also told about the prelude engine swap. I've read about this and heard about it before. I'm sure I'd enjoy the increase in power that I'd get out of it, and I know it wouldn't be that expensive or difficult, but I have some speculations.

Anyone who knows about the engine swap, or has any experience with it, I have some questions.

I live in California.
Would my accord with the h22a pass smog?
What would it be like on gas?
Would it be road legal?

Any input would be appreciated, thankyou
