How do Headers work on a Camaro
With paint and everything else out the way I'm starting to focus on my next mod Headers for a tbi 305. I brought the stock ralleys for it and the 16 inch wheels I'm gonna sell with that money I plan on buying headers and a y pipe. Also I must say with the 15 inch wheels I pick up speed alot fasters wheels lock up and everything. Back to the headers, Flowtech or maybe elberbrock. I seen some one post something on here in the past that would allow you to run both header pipes from the engine down one side and then in to two in the back. Or can a shop handle this for me and I"m worrying too much. I already have a catback system on the car that sounds good but i believe with headers they will be no use to me and I will need to muffler one for each pipe running from the headers.

Re: How do Headers work on a Camaro
Are you saying that you want to run true dual exhaust? If you get headers and a y-pipe you could keep the cat-back system you have, and join the two. There isn't a lot of room under you car for dual exhaust front to rear, it can be done (custom made), but there won't be much ground clearance.

Re: How do Headers work on a Camaro
headers are definatly worth the money, there was a drastic difference in both sound and performance when in installed my edelbrock TES headers. only catch is they are a pain in the ass to install, and you need a modified socket and wrench to get your spark plugs off. You can definatly do it yourself, i think Link did it in like two days or something. the edelbrock system is the header pipes, and the Y pipe, with the doughnuts and mounting hardware. i used the included exhaust gaskets but i would reccomend you buy some copper gaskets like i plan on upgrading to. the hardest part will be getting the old Y pipe off the catalytic converter so you can put the new Y pipe on, youll need a torch for that. do a search on here about the edeblrock TES headers, and youll find i did a lengthy post describing what i had to do to install them.

Re: How do Headers work on a Camaro
my edelbrock TES headers were a direct swap and retained all the emissions equipment. only catch with these headers is you need to either modify or buy a modifed socket to get the plugs out of the heads. the primary pipes are routed directly over the spark plugs and there is no room for a socket and ratchet. and the plugs are sunk into the heads so you cant get a wrench on them. a modifed socket will allow you to use a wrech and socket combination to get the plugs out.

Eh, I tried using a sawsall, but that thing jumped around everywhere. I ended up using a grinder, and that thing worked wonders. And that's what I used to cut the bolts in the flange that go from the y-pipe to the cat. You definately don't need a torch for that. Took me 2 seconds to get those bolts cut through.

Re: How do Headers work on a Camaro
well you could do it that way, i heated the Y-pipe to it would expand and then pulled it off the catalytic converter so that all the pipes were still uncut and intact.
