Hard shift on auto transmission 2001

My girlfriend has a real hard shift from first to second gear. We have been told that it's something that usually happens with this type of car. Is this true? Is the transmission on the way out?? There 82,000KM (around 50,000 miles)

Thanks in advance

Rick

I just realized I never posted back here on this. It turns out that it was a power transfer issue. She was having problems with the altenator, and when we replaced that, the tranny issues went away!

Weird I know, but it worked!

I would check the ground next to the battery also, I have had cars with shifting problems when this gorund is not clean and tight.
