i am looking at buying a 96 sebring either 2.5 or 2.6 v6 overdrive transmission. it has one problem the transmission won't shift out of first. the owner says he talked to a chrysler dealership and they told him it was probably the speed sensors. i dont know if this is true or not. i do know chrysler had some transmission issues. can anyone tell me if this is true or if theres anyway of telling if it is the transmission going bad.

Re: 1996 sebring tranny problem
well my first piece of advice would be to ask if you can take the car to a mechanic to throughly look over the car. If they say no, then dotn buy the car. Sebrings are popular, theres going to be another one that you can find that doesnt have the problem. If they say yes, get it looked over, ask for a price estimate(have it written) and go to the dealer which would make it much easier for them to come down on the price a lot. Never trust dealers to tell you the truth. As for the speed sensor thing, I doubt thats it. It doesnt make sense why it wouldnt shift as the sensor has little(i believe) to do with the transmission. If the speed sensor is going out, the speedometer wouldnt work. It could be the computer? or(most likely) is the transmission going out. Get it checked by a professional though, someone you know and trust.

Re: 1996 sebring tranny problem
Actual, the speed sensor can cause the car to go into 'limp mode' where it will not shift out of first gear. A clue if this is the problem will be that the spedometer will not move off zero, even when going 10 mph in first gear.
