Shifter location / gear changes has moved?!?

Hi All,

I'm having a REALLY odd problem. My shifter is "migrating" or something.

I bought the car with an aftermarket clutch (unknown type) ... gear pattern was just like my Trans Am (for 1-6)

1- Up/Left
2- Down/Left
3- Up/Neutral
4- Down/Neutral
5- Up/Right
6- Down/Right

Then, I had a full factory set ... throwoff, pressure plate, clutch, etc. installed. Gears shifted some:

1- Up/Left
2- Down/Left
3- Up/Right
4- Down/Right
5- Up/WAY Right
6- Down/WAY Right

After getting it from the shop (post wreck ... less than 400 miles from the work done above!)

1- Up/Neutral
2- Down/Neutral
3- Up/Right
4- Down/Right
5- Up/WAY Right
6- Down/WAY Right

What the heck happened? Is there a way to move it back to the first setup I had (Trans Am style?)

Thanks!

Oh, sorry I thought I replied to this. Pull up the base of your shifter boot. Look down at the linkage and see what one moves when you move the shifter side to side. Now adjust that one so 3rd and 4th are back to the center position. Also check to make sure that the spring that returns the shifter to the center position is working and seated properly.

Re: Shifter location / gear changes has moved?!?

Thanks talskinyguy ... I'll give it a try when it gets back out of the shop (again) and let you know how it goes. Is there any way to keep it from moving again, or is this just a common thing that randomly needs to be done? I've driven a stick less than 2 years (but NO the spyder wasn't my first), so I'm not sure what's common and what isn't....

No it is not common to have to adjust it, but if anything was dont under the hood the shifter linkage could have been moved. There are lock nuts on the shifter side of the linkage that should prevent it from moving in the future.

Re: Shifter location / gear changes has moved?!?

Hmm... when I had the clutch assembly replaced in November, they definitely could have moved it some (probably on accident). I'm guessing the t-bone driver's side impact could have been enough to push it the rest of the way over. Thanks much for the info!

Thumbs up

UPDATE: Thanks Talskinyguy! It worked perfectly! I was able to take the car out last night and run it a bit, and the shifting is nice and smooth and JUST where I wanted it!
